Me an OH are planning an American road trip in June, travelling from Las Vegas to New York We are expecting to take around 7-8 weeks to complete the journey.
My question is, does anyone know of a car hire firm that doesn't slap horrendous surcharges for one way hire and any additional drivers
Thanks in advance

  • insurance will be a killer for 60 days on top of one way rates. May be best to try and schedule 2 x 30/31 day one way rentals. Something like Thrifty offer one way rentals for midsize at about $650 a month. Then buy a USA policy from insurance4carhire for £129 (- discount codes you can find on here and quidco etc)

The insurance policy only covers rentals up to 31 days therefore doing two rentals gets around this. Also rental companies generally work in 1 month blocks for discount rates anyway so should get the same rate per month regardless of duration over 1 month.

    For example.
$609.42 per month Wild Card deal (mid size or better allocated on collection)
1st June - 1st July (Thrifty Las Vegas) pickup and drop off for 1st rental
1st July - 31st July (Thrifty Las Vegas -> New York Manhattan)

    total price $1218.84 = £812
Seems like Las Vegas do good rates anyway so may be worth going back through vegas after doing west coast (LA, SF, Oregon, Grand Canyon, Salt Lake City etc)

Might also be worth looking for a cheap rental location in New York and just getting a cheap internal flight between Vegas and New York and just getting another rental over on east coast rather than driving right across.

If you don't mind a bit of adventure, don't rule out buying a car. We did this a couple of years ago, bought a Ford Taurus (Mondeo-ish) at auction for $1800 and ended up selling it for $2000 after having stuck over 10,000 miles on the clock over 3 months!

The 'profit' just about paid for the insurance (State Farm, you will need a USA address 'tho), only other thing we had to pay was their version of road tax (can't remember exact amount, but not much compared to the UK) and fuel!

Sorry to hijack the OP's original thread, but I was intending to post today about the same subject, different scenario though.

I intend to rent 2 cars separately in the US in August. First is Los Angeles - San Francisco, and the second San Francisco - Las Vegas.

Been looking at quotes and a lot of sites (Thrifty, Dollar, carhire3000) have a fairly decent price, but say "One way fees may apply to this rental, if they do we will advise you after booking. You will have the chance to cancel"

Which I understand, but don't really want to go through the hassle of finding the most suitable deal and then having to cancel due to fees that they will only advise you of after booking?! I have been told that for UK tourists, that one way fees very rarely apply if they are within California and Nevada. Does anyone know if this is true and if so which companies it applies to?

Thanks, and sorry again OP for hijacking your thread!
