Does any1 know what the cheapest way to call home from america?

Make sure the people you are going to phone are on call1899.co.uk, give them a very short call (just long enough to give them the number you're calling from) and get them to ring you back on 1899 for a total cost of 3p.

If you will have access to a broadband connection in the US, then sign up for Vonage.co.uk at home and you should be able to call UK landlines from anywhere in the world at no charge. But I'm only just learning about Vonage, so check it carefully, to confirm.

I did post this in the old forum but it got lost...

If you need to call home there are a whole range of phonecard and "virtual phonecard" services. The one I used and can recommend was https://www.click4prepaid.com - they charge 5cents a minute to call the UK (plus I think about 50c connection fee if you use a payphone. You buy a virtual card online with your CC and get to log in and view your account history online, and can top up your balance at any time.
There were numerous slightly cheaper ones available from other companies but they required a CC with a US billing address.

The 1899 route would work if you're staying at someone's house or something but I think a lot of payphones do not accept incoming calls.
