Dumbo here :o not sure if I have an ethernet on the PC which is 7 years old. There are 2 sockets next to each other at the back of the PC that look the same and one I use to plug into the telephone for dial up. This obviously connects to internal modem but would the other one be for ethernet? Same 2 socket on another PC 3 years old and on the casing one say phone and the other says line.

What you have described is a modem/phone connection. An Ethernet port looks very similar but is a bit larger like this:

Sounds like you need a network card. If you look in Networks Connections you should see if you have one fitted in your machine.

Had a look in Networks but no Connections tab. I am using Windows 98 SE.

Not got 98SE here but from memory Control Panel, System, Hardware, Device Manager where you should see a NIC if you have one under Network Adapters shown as an Ethernet adapter.

All I can find is Dial-up Adaptor and Dial-up Adaptor #2(VPN) so presumably these relate to the 2 sockets I have and are dial up only and not ethernet.

Chose one from post #3 then, with instructions for fitting given in a later post.

Thanks for that :DI've got the problem that I can't get the router near the computer because my master line enters the house by the front door, then there is an internal extension to the kitchen,
    Hi
I don't want to confuse you anymore, but this is exactly the same setup I have in my house and this is what I did that worked for me. I bought an adsl backplate, it has 2 ports, 1 for your router, and 1 for your phone line, and no filters are needed. This just replaces your standard NTE5 backplate.

All I bought then is a cat5e cable, which come in different lengths, from 5-20metres, one end goes into the port on your backplate and the other goes in your router.

Very easy to do and setup, no wiring involved if you don't want to rewire, just unscew your old nte5 plate, and screw this one on.

This is what I did, as I wasn't getting all I could from my ADSLMAX connection, as I have quite a long line and the cheap telephone extenstion I was using wasn't working very well on MAX.

I've received the USB adapter from MyMemory but after installation, restart and troubleshooting it won't pick up any wireless networks and I know there are 3 in range because my laptop picks them up. One network is next door's which is a 4/5 bar strength but this USB thing gets nothing at all

I've looked through the troubleshooting but it still doesn't come up with any wireless networks. The icon in taskbar has a little red thing above it but the manual is about as helpful as a chocolate teapot in telling me how to fix it.

Somebody help please! :o It's an IEEE802.11g adapter made by "Simple Connection" but that's about all the info I can find on the packaging

Did you follow the installation procedure given in Section 4 (page 5) of this User Guide? You must install the driver before plugging the device into your computer.

Section 5 of the user guide states "If the icon is in red, it means that WLAN USB Adapter configuration is invalid or incomplete. Double click on that icon and the configuration window will pop up as shown below. It shows the SSID of available network. Once a network is chosen, the signal strength and link quality are displayed............."

Have you done this? The user guide looks very good to me, so simply follow the instructions!

Yes I've read all the instructions. I always do before asking for help :p however AOL sent the Netgear router with an "easy-install" cd and no userguide

Anyway, it seems pretty on-off whether this wireless dongle works - and it seems to get quite hot as well - though the user guide says 0- 50C operating temp.

I'm getting theNetgear set up. Well no I'm not, becauase i don't know how to do it but as soon as someone lets me know how the hell I get hold of a user guide I'll be away. Yeah, right, like that's possible with A-O-Hell

That's easy, just download a manual from here.

You obviously need to set up your router first with your SSID, WPA encryption, etc and then move on to configure your USB dongle.
