Advice for someone possibly moving to Europe

Hey Everyone,
There's a chance that I am moving to Europe - specifically to Estonia - in the next few months. Might be moving back and forth between there and the UK a bit, but Estonia will probably be my main base for a while,
Just wondering if anyone has experience with using their mobile abroad for an extended period of time. I recently started a new Orange contract (£20 a month for a HTC Hero with unlimited internet and free minutes and texts) and - even though I know all my texts and stuff can;t be used abroad - I'd like to keep the phone as it's really good.
So to advice
Has anyone had to use their phone abroad for an extended period of time and, if so, what did they do. Of course, it seems I should just get a new Estonian sim card and use that. But I'm worried that it won't work in my HTC Hero and also worried that, even whilst in Europe, I still have my UK mobile number for work and a lot of people use it /know it. Would it still pick up internet if I just used Wi-Fi (which would be useful as the country is blanketed in it)
So, yeah, just any advice really about what I may need to do to continue using the phone / makes calls / perhaps keep my UK phone number active without paying a small fortune. Just any experience and the like,
And if anyone knows Estonia, before they ask: yes I use Skype as well! They would lynch me if I didn't!

Any SIM will work in your phone as long as the phone is not locked to Orange-if it is, get it unlocked.
Using a UK SIM will result in substantial roaming charges, cripplingly high if you use data as well as voice services.
Your Orange number will remain active for as long as you are in contract, whether you use that SIM or not.
Why not just get an Estonian PAYG SIM or phone for local usage? No free lunch, and no free laptop0
