I should have mentioned- dd is almost 20, and is fiercely independant. (As I type, she's backpacking somewhere rather too close to the Gaza strip for my liking....) She's chosen the car...and has done so fully informed. She's also into the concept of recycling a classic, rather than consuming ever more.

    Absolutely.
There's also a lot to be said for a young driver having a car with approachable grip limits and fewer driver aids, not to mention less power! Mistakes when they do happen will be slower and less painful, and more educational.

My car has mid engined handling, skinny-ish tyres, no ABS, traction control, airbags or crash structure to speak of. I've seen post-crash photos of them and they basically fold in half with the driver in the middle. That's a fairly persuasive argument for not crashing in the first place. It's also nice thinking I'm keeping a classic on the road and getting super fun motoring at a bargain price.
  • i've gone a different route

8 years ago i bought a 1993 citroen ax 5 door, low mileage, cleaned up nicely, used it for 2 years and sold it for £25 profit

that went on the car that forms part of my sig, £4800 purchase price 2002 fiat stilo, 21k 5 door. still got it now 6 years later. i get roughly £1.5-2k if it gets written off, its on 44k now
things arent the way they were before, you wouldnt even recognise me anymore- not that you knew me back then ;)
BH is my best mate too, its ok :)

Wait until you've got kids learning to drive....
I wonder if anyone except the uber-rich could afford a car by then. If so i hope they they will get the same learning oppertunities I had. getting a scrambler as a 12 year old and a moped when I was 16 never did me any harm in fact it taught me a lot about vehicle control, mechanical sympathy and mechanics and budgeting. used to get a laugh at the miserable gits who used to say that your a bad parent if you let your bairns on a motorbike.

Thats getting off the point anyway. old cars arent as good at crashing, so just drive careful. If bad stuffs going to happen, it will happen.

    Thread title: "In theory... Bangernomics"
For you to use the word bangernomics would offend a true follower of the art, bangernomics is not about "saving" a crappy old Rover from the scrapheap in order to spend hundreds upon hundreds on it to fix major problems, especially before you've even had any good use of the car.

Bangernomics is about using the car , then selling or scrapping it before or when the problems arise.

The person who sold you the car was probably in to bangernomics.
You were just the mug that come along and bought it.

    Sorry. :)

Don't throw good money after bad is all I have to say.
  • While at uni I bought a H reg Rover 216SLI, (honda engined one)

Cost me £130, spent £15 on a CV joint kit, £30 on a tyre to get it through its first MOT.

Ran it for 3 years, add the cost of basic service items, oil, filters, spark plugs, brake pads. Doing all the work myself.

    Sold it for £450

Which is a lot more than you'd get trying to trade it in - most unwanted car in Britain at one point :rotfl:.

    How's it been though?

surprisingly good, electrics are shocking but it goes, turns corners and stops.

i dont plan on px-ing it, as there are so few genuine low mileage cars and the only dealer i trust is the one i bought the stilo from

Incidentally i still regard my Honda engined Rover 827 as one of my best cars, totally reliable nice to drive with the smoothest engine i've ever used, would still pull well over twice the limit without effort at 130k miles.

    Twice what speed limit though?
Top speed of the 827 Vitesse was a mere 137mph.....not quite twice the motorway limit.
Your speedo may well have been at twice the limit....but you weren't!!
