In theory...Bangernomics

Yeh its a banger in the sense iv spent about £1100 on a car, deposit for insurance, battery, wiper and alot of stuff to make it look alot nicer and inside comfier.
£485 for a car isnt a banger? Lol. Just need to save like mad so this was better than spending £££s a month on a new car. Whats the point in having a new car and no money at all when you could have ££££s and an old car that looks new enough.Work in progress...Update coming July 2012.

No, I'm not questioning it's banger status, I thought you said you'd spent £1000 on extra bits for it, not £1000 including the £485 you paid.

Sorry, but private plate on a banger = fail.
When you scrap the car you'll lose the plate!
I'm not saying what you've done is wrong, just that you're not running a true banger, but cost effective motoring.
Time was you could pick up a perfectly servicable car for less than the cost of a plate transfer - I think scrappage has done more than a bit to get rid of that.0 -
Thing is mine used to be a banger till i got my hands on it
The plate helped a bit to transfer it into a half decent car. Asked someone at my work how much they thought i paid for it, he said £2k at least, more likely nearer 3. Its so tidy for its age i love it.
Work in progress...Update coming July 2012.

*ahem*
I've been in a crash in a classic mini. The officers who stumbled on the aftermath reckoned that had I been in anything much heavier, I wouldn't have been able to stop it before it hit oncoming traffic. The Mini was a write off (although repairable- it's a mini!) and me & my daughter suffered whiplash...I had a minor shoulder injury too from wrenching the car out of the path of oncoming traffic.
DH is currently restoring DD#1's first car for when she passes her test- a Mini clubman.
She's being taught to drive as I was taught to ride a motorbike- defensively.
We're in an "arms race" situation with cars now- it's getting silly. In 20 more years will we all be needing to drive Sherman Tanks because "everyone else is?"Only dead fish go with the flow...0 -

I could put my 17 year old in a hummer, I suppose she'd be safe anyway.
No, I'll just stick to being a bad parent, she can keep her mini.0 -
I think you have done something good
I had a 17 year old car which was passed down the family , very reliable and even thow I dont own it now , it is still going very strong and has not had to have many repairs done on it ever , probably the maximum of £30 here and there
I love bangers and there is so many available now , but all my friends with nearly new cars have to spend tons on repairs and parts , just because they go a bit faster . But if your only driving in the uk for normal family and work life a banger is very reliable with little costs and insurance to pay .
Unless your job is driving for a living , then a banger is best

I've got a fibreglass bodied beach buggy, 67 chassis, the only thing between you and everything else is 5mm of resin and glassfibre, your legs are under the petrol tank, it has single circuit brakes, the chassis has been cut in half and welded back together in someones garage 30+ years ago, the engine behind you stands in for the rear bumper, but it's a real car, not a grotty tin box, and it's actually fun to drive.
She wants that off me when she can insure it.0
