I inserted new batteries into my old Olympus OM10 (35mm camera) and, while the battery check shows OK (beeps and lights illuminates), the shutter will not fire. The mirror is down and its possible to look through the viewfinder and note display indicates the recommended shutter speed. I opened the back and it all looks OK. Now if only I can get the shutter to fire...
..anyone any ideas?
Thanks

Sounds like the shutter may have seized. Probably best to take it into your nearest camera shop. If asked nicely i'm sure they'll confirm that's the case without charging you!
Has it been unused for some time?0 -
Yes - unused for many years. I purchased a Nikon F601 AF which was great while it was workign but now there is a problem with the case which means that it will not close properly. I am tempted to try closing it with an elastic band!0
-
Lol, i'd try small pieces of Gaffa Tape!0
-
No tape as that would be a sticky nightmare to remove - about half a dozen bands I think0

Did you take the lens off and try to trip the shutter?
I have a brace of similar Olympus cameras, all 25 to 30 years old. None of them work very well now. They had hard use when I was a professional. Now the years of variable humidity and temperatures has made the electronics unreliable. The greases and oils used on the moving parts isn't the same as when they came out of the factory. I haven't used them much in the past 15 years either and that doesn't help.
Your OM10 was the cheapest in the Olympus SLR line and probably isn't worth repairing. There aren't many repair shops left that will look at 35mm SLRs. Your typical clerk at Jessops wouldn't have a clue.0 -
I had one of those. I bought it in the early 80s and used it regularly for many years.
It was a great camera.
I sold it with all my lenses etc for about £100 a few years ago.
There is little point paying to repair yours as you can buy them or other old Olympus SLR camera bodies on ebay quite cheaply.

Under £20 for this OM10 body.

Thanks Av - no way I'll be paying for a repair or even £20 for a replacement (well - unlikely)
Cheers

Thanks Oldtoolie - I don't think I'll go for a repair. Prob not even worth a repair on the Nikon
p.s. Yes - I did take the lens off but no firing0 -
My other camera is a Hasselblad 503cx which I believe works fine but the flashgun which I used to use with it - a Metz 45 - seems a bit dead0
-
I repair camera and have prob fixed about a 1000 of these in my time
they normally suffer from shutter loading gears are out of sync
unfortunately would be a £30 repair0
