Good hay is green in colour, bad hay is brown and is far less nutritious than the green hay. Quality is probably more important than actual grass species.
• awesome :D I wish you all the luck in the world with your new buns :)

another good hutch manufacturer is Ryedale, I'm not a big fan of Happy Hutch personally, although a lot of people like them.

another option for housing rabbits is to get a dog run type enclosure, or a garden shed/child's wendy house with a run attached (put a cat flap in the side). obviously these will require a bit more time and money to set up but it's so much easier to have an enclosure you can walk into, I remember crawling on my knees in the mud trying to catch my rabbits from their 2' high run, it was a nightmare!

• I use farm hay, it's super cheap and great quality.

in the past I have used hay from dustfreehay.co.uk, it is delicious stuff and rabbits go mad for it - I even tried a little bit myself once cos it smelt so good! *face of shame* It's cheaper than oxbow but you will need to wait in for the delivery and they won't specify the exact day, just a rough estimate.

Ryedale hutchs are fab, little on the expensive side though. Certainly a good investment as will probably last the rabbits lifetime but they are very heavy so you'd have to think about where to put it as it will be awkward to move after and also I think some people have had probs with the way they have designed their ramp ie its a bit on the steep side. They also don't have much overhang at the front of the roof.

Happy hutch although not as strong as Ryedale, the prices are relative to that of say p@h but the wood is better quality.

You are funny :rotfl: Makes me feel better about eating some lemon lipseal because it smelt really good. I was seven or eight but even so :o:o:o:o:o
• Never tried hay but I have tried cat and dog biscuits on quiet days! I draw the line at tinned food though :(
• Well, after looking around the some of the local pet stores, and the internet we have ordered a new hutch, and its this one...

http://www.the-rabbit-hutch-shop.com/Items/GDHG64?&caSKU=GDHG64&caTitle=New%206%20x%202%20Pet%20Rabbit%20Ferret%20Hutch%20%26%20Run%20Large%20Bunny%20Cage

6 x 2 x 2 hutch with a 6 x 4 x 2 run beneath - cost £40 more than the previous one, but at least we know this is the right sort of size for a pair of rabbits to be happy/comfortable in.

I have also been back in touch with the local rabbit rescue centre, who say that the hutch is acceptable to them, and subject to a satisfactory home check, they would be happy to allow us to adopt a pair of (hopefully) bonded bunnies from them.

We ordered over the weekend, so hopefully the hutch will arrive early this week, and once its set-up and in place in the garden, we'll get the rescue centre down to hopefully approve us for adoption.

Will post back with an update when we hopefully have our buns!

Can't wait to read the update, you sound like a great bunny owner & very caring! I'm sure the bunnies in time will be ok to be held by your Son? if he's sitting down, they just panic at heights! I used to have French Lops & also British Giants x English Spot & Dwarf Lops & would love to have rabbits again in the future, until then I will be needing pics!
