I believe it's Panasonic and Technics who are the same. Pioneer are a different entity.

You are right - will amend myself!!!

Picture quality can be tuned on all of them and there are only a few companies who make screens - so differences in picture can be minimal.

My mum in law bought the cheapest she could find in Asda - it does more than lots of the major brands (and more than she will ever need) and the picture is excellent.

Where cheaper TVs tend to fall down is on sound quality,

Then again sound quality seems to be a major issue on nearly all LCDs not just cheap brands - simply for the way they are designed.

My son got a cheap and cheerful large Baird set, reasonable picture until he put Sky HD through it - its the same now as my Sony (which by the way needs to have the surround sound system plugged into it if we are doing some serious watching).

We have a small Sony in the touring caravan as that has a far better tuner than most and has picked up signals on some campsites where our neighbors have had to resort to drinking and playing cards!!!!!

I would recommend Panasonic as a first choice then Sony then LG but it is down to personal preference. When I was last looking most people in the trade said get a Panasonic. Hope this helps.

We have samsungs and they have been great. Also John Lewis normally have a five year warranty with their tvs. Weighed up against a possibly slightly cheaper price for the tv elsewhere, the warranty is well worth it.

Sony everytime - great TVs with some brilliant features and always cross-compatible too with Sony PS3, cameras, etc. Would always buy a Sony TV - Bravia LCD's are great.

Hi. My mum and dad have a Toshiba television that is now 20 years old. It cost about £800 from ScottishPower and was the most expensive item in the showroom at the time. Still going strong. Dolby sound is great!

I have a Grundig that cost me £260 from Curry's six years ago. It's a great set, the sound is something else. I am dreading either mine or my parents' set needs replaced as it's all these flat screen tv's now. I get the impression they are unreliable. Also how can the sound be that great when there is very little bulk to it?

A really good thread though. :)

We got one now - a Sony - that has some excellent some poor reviews just because she was adamant she wanted one NOW!!!

Now she says we should have got a 42" instead of a 40"! Can't win whatever. Just glad we got a decent brand with warranty instead of buying some crap just to keep up with the Jones's like everyone seemed to a couple of years ago.

If it was down to me I would have rather kept our Panasonic flat screen 32" and saved £550!! I also think that standard def was better on that.

Have to admit that full HD is amazing and with upscaling DVD can't see the point in Bluray - even though we have a PS3.

I would rather they put full series dvds like CSI and The Sopranos on one Bluray - would be much easier!!
