BT "unlimited broadband" limited to 80kb!

  • It should stand up in court - a limit at the rate something may be used is a limit to it's use. Or to put another way a 40kbs limit does allow one to download 4GB by tomorrow, contrary to the claim "Downloading as much as you want, when you want".

An allowance needs to made for the case where the network has limited capacity (but nothing worse than max-min fairness, or persistently less than the advertised speed), and when bottleneck is the responsibility of the far end.

In an attempt to resolve the apparent contradiction "excessive" and "unfair" can be interpreted as prohibiting usage without TCP-friendly congestion control, thereby obtaining more than a fair share of a congested link.

I want to download 1TB right now.... ummm... guess I can't.... unless you wait 10/11 days using a 10Mb Ethernet connection (approx 1.1Mbs)

You're always limited to the rate that data flows ;)

They will always claim that you can download as much as you want (aka unlimited) - this will stand, though it is limited to the data transfer rate (which they don't say is unlimited)

It's a bit like me letting you rent a car from me for the day - and I'd pay for the petrol, with me saying you can go as far as you like (but I've limited the speed of the car to 30mph). [Note: this is not an offer]
It won't stand since you have unlimited use of the car for one day (which is what was offered), but you just can't go as far as you really want to (which was not mentioned).

Downloading in excess of 100gb is rediculous overuse of the internet. You are being capped to protect other customer's on the exchange. I mean I don't even think I would have the time to download so much data in one month the usage in this house hits 40-60gb at a push and everyone is online on a daily basis. When you set up a phone deal with 'unlimited' texts it is also subject to a fair usage policy... It is there to stop people taking the p***. Also, as previously stated the service is still unlimited whether fast or slow you can continue using the service as much as you like just not as quickly as you'd like.
