Went in and opened an account today. Was also offered a current account whereby I'll get £40 once I've deposited £250.:D Needless to say, got one of those too. Don't have to keep current account long either, so maybe I'll take it and run. :D

Yep the new year campaign is £40 for a switch.

They haven't offered over £40 yet as incentives for the bank account, any salary transfer requirements.

I think you used to have to send your salary transfer request in to Abbey then they would send it on and credit the money as people are less likely to leave.

  • On the £40 to open a current account deal you have to be switching from another bank, but you don't have to close the old account (though Abbey will match your facilities). You get the £40 once £500 has been paid in to the new account.

Gotta be quick on this one too, as the last day is Monday. From 1 Feb the offer becomes £50, but you only get it if Abbey make an error switching your account.

I was offered one of these £40 deals whilst opening my 7% account. I don't work, but am on an unpaid career break, so was told that would be OK. She put me down as a partial switcher, just having my child benefit paid into the account. Was told I'd get the £40 once I'd deposited £250 into it. I'm not letting them close my old account down because once I have the £40, I'm switching everything back again and closing the Abbey one.

Well I have had a regular saver for a month and had heard about this £40 offer so I went in on the 31st to get it. However I was told I would have to switch accounts. Clearly not everyone has had to do this. My understanding was you had to credit the account (with your salary) NOT close your exisiting account. If I did that I would lose an online saver linked to it and a generous overdraft facility (which abbey said they could match, but for how long?). Also I wanted to trial Abbey first, based on the problems others have shared on this board

Anyway it seems abbey are applying the rules in a haphazard manner and I was turned down as soon as I said I didnt want to switch. I hadn't even given my name, so it wasn't for any other reason. Needless to say I have complained to abbey, but I am not holding my breath for a reply. It's (another) big 0/10 for abbey from me!
  • No you didn't have to close accounts. However it had to be a switch, as I said in my post above on the 29th. A "switch" with Abbey doesn't involve closing your other account, or even transferring your DDs and SOs. As your "0/10" rating for Abbey is based on the fact that they didn't give you some free money then you're the kind of customer we can do without (no offence!!)

Don't worry Halifax isn't going anywhere :) (not in the next few months so they told me anyway)

I'm opening a Halifax regular saver account today. Any dodgy dealings/clauses they may try and throw at me I should know about and be cautious of?
