Help required with television

Hi,

I need some advice please. I used to have a portable television to watch in the bedroom since I don't have an aerial socket to install an ordinary tv. The questions I have are:

Is it possible to still purchase portable television since I don't have an aerial socket installed in that particular room?

Can I watch an ordinary television in a room that does not consist of an aerial socket? Is that what the digiboxes are for?

I apologise that I don't have much of an idea about these things.

Its doubtful the signal strength would be strong enough for 'freeview' to work (Which is a digital signal which is what all tvs now use). Youve been using 'analogue' which will work on even very weak signals.
So in answer id say ~ Yes (a small tv would be classed as portable), doubtful (some tvs work better with weak signals than others)and possible (possible in that if your not willing to connect to a roof aerial then youd have to connect to either cable or sky)

Thank, we already have Sky but I am wondering how I can watch a television in a room that does not have a tv aerial socket? Would I need to get a portable tv or purchase a box or something?
  • you can buy a small LCD TV new or pick up a old crt Portable now second hand fairly cheap these days

you will need a set top aerial if you dont have a aerial

these are not ideal but depending on positioning can get a watchable freeview picture

you have to try various positions for the aerial and can be very hit and miss

sometimes you wont get a picture at all if you are in a weak signal area

go here and put in your postcode http://www.ukfree.tv/starthere.php

As said above, its pot luck. It might work if you use a cheapie indoor aerial, it might not (Chances are it wont)

As you have Sky another thing to consider would be a videosender.

    Example rather than a recommendation...

You connect one unit to your Skybox and the other to the TV in the bedroom. It will only show the same program as the main TV and can cause and get interference with WiFi routers as both use the same frequency band although you can pay more and get 5GHz units instead which is less commonly used for WiFi.

I don't have a roof aerial at all, only have Sky(free).

For my little tv in kitchen I use an AV Sender,

    5345014A64UC185402M.jpg
transmitter connects to Sky box and receiver to TV via scart, no need for extension cables running about the place.

You have to watch what is on main tv, but as I live alone there are few arguments, unless my split personality kicks in. :rotfl:

Some of them allow you to change channels from kitchen/bedroom.

The one illustrated is from Argos, though you can get them cheaper, why not get one and try it, if I doesn't work you can take it back, Argos have 14 or 16 days return policy, keep receipt, just incase.

Would we have to watch the same programmes though or could we watch different things?

The video sender just transmits whatever is already going to the main TV (as I already mentioned above)
  • Hi,

oops kwikbreaks just noticed your similar post from this morning, I must've been busy composing mine when your's was received, anyway, wee gadget works ok for me in the kitchen, bit of interference when microwave on so just put telly on mute.

This often happens - I composed one myself this morning only to see another saying essentially the same thing when I posted my own. Yep - microwaves also work in the same band as you've found and can interfere - I gave up using a TV sender a long while back because of the problems with WiFi and had forgotten that.
