Council Right to Buy

Hi

I bought my house from the local council a few years ago but find I am struggling with the mortgage payments due to losing my job. I want to become just a council tenant again, but I have been in this house for over 30 years and dont want to move out.

Does anyone know if the council would buy my house back and let me stay in it as a tenant?

Thanks

If they were interested in buying, they probably would do so with the intention of housing someone on their waiting list rather than becoming your landlord and paying you for the privilege.

How much is the value of the house compared to outstanding mortgage debt.
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales

It depends on which part of the country yr in....as some councils have been known to operate such a scheme...however you should be seeking advice from CAB or similar if yr in difficulty....don't fall prey to the Sale and Rent Back scheme that is much publicised on the back page of the red tops........
  • Thank you all for your comments. I am an older lady living on my own so I would not be comfortable living with a lodger. I am on interest only already as the building society have been very understanding but with no incom coming in, even interest only is too expensive for me.

I will however, speak to the CAB about help with my mortgage, and also my local council to see if they offer any support.

Also go on to the other forums here, where people make suggestions of managing your budget, benefit entitlements etc...maybe something to help you in the meantime........

Being an 'older lady on your own' is no reason not to get a lodger- just be picky who you have- might end up being the best thing you ever did!

Are you not claiming support for mortgage interest?

The Shelter website has a list of schemes available to home owners that are struggling with their mortgages to prevent repossession by the lender.
