Help - I have a Windows 7 Ultimate laptop. Everytime I try to run secpol.msc or gpedit.msc I get an error message saying:
"Failed to open the Group Policy Object on this computer. You may not have appropiate rights.
Details
Data error (cyclic redundancy check)"
I was able to run secpol & gpedit in the past. I a user acount with admin rights so I don't understand why I get this message.

My advice has no basis more reliable than my own meandering experience.

- changed your nym have you James, new account, new name !
- it should be there in Ultimate / Professional, but not in Home / Premium / Basic
- a common mistake is not to type the ' last three ' * . msc file extension. 7 won't find gpedit unless you append the .msc file extension
As for the policy ( secpol ) change I am reluctant to give you info on have to become a full administrator . . . you could try temporarily disabling the UAC to see if that helpsDisclaimer : Everything I write on this forum is my opinion. Nope not changed user account name. I always try by going start --> run and then type gpedit.msc or secpol.msc. UAC is always disabled. My advice has no basis more reliable than my own meandering experience.0

In that case you are, as I said, not an administrator, and do not have required rights to perform policy change.Disclaimer : Everything I write on this forum is my opinion. In the control panel prog user account it states my user name - then says "administrator" i don't understand why I could open gpedit & secpol recently and not nowMy advice has no basis more reliable than my own meandering experience.0

You are a : "" a user acount with [ some ] admin rights ""
You are not really : "" an administrator ""
- are you saying that : until very recently on that same puter you could run gpedit & secpol ?
- are you saying that : running gpedit & secpol gives you a ' crc ' error message ?
If you recently used to be able to run gpedit & secpol without a problem on that puter but now you can't run gpedit & secpol and get a ' crc ' error it means that you have corrupted the scource - and / or - destination of gpedit & secpol.
CRC simplified, means when you send a block of data from A to B it has a checknumber assigned to it. If when it arrives at the destination is doesn't match the source [ source & destination are the same ] that's a CRC error ! because the checknumber test fails
Has something you've done recently caused that kind of corruption [ usually in the registry ] ?Disclaimer : Everything I write on this forum is my opinion. Thank you for your help & explanation Richie. The only thing I've done recently is install Avira 10. I use CCleaner once a week to clean the registry. Is there a way to re-install gpedit & secpol? My advice has no basis more reliable than my own meandering experience.0

Some AV's allow individual ' actions ' to be allowed / not allowed, [ example : Kasperskey & fSecure do - MSEssentials does not ] I have no idea if Avira is one of those progs you can change a previously banned action to an allowed action, someone reading this may well be able to tell you, in any event have a look.
Consider that your recent install of Avira may be ' blocking ' your wish to access gpedit & secpol.
CC

Similarly ccleaner may have removed [ never heard of it before though ] the registry entries for the two *.msc extension loctions. If you have backed up in ccleaner the ' restore options ' will still be there, have a look !

The remote LGPE version is here : http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=7d2f6ad7-656b-4313-a005-4e344e43997d&displayLang=en
Have a look in your ' event viewer ', there are usually lots of clues to what's happening in there !
As a starting point, I'd just zap Avira as a diagnostic task, and see if it's a cure. The odd are it's protecting any policy changes.
Anyone else reading this know Avira ?Disclaimer : Everything I write on this forum is my opinion. I've had a look in event viewer and don't know where to start really. I unhid the administrator account & got the same thing. Booted in to safe mode & again I got the same thing. Damn annoying. My advice has no basis more reliable than my own meandering experience.0
