just checked my email from bmibaby confirming details of my flight to paris next thursday and that definitely says I can check in online between 72 and 3 hours before the flight is due to leave. So just goes to show it is certainly not a daft question - I'm wondering if anyone knows whether this is a recent change by bmibaby?

I used them in Sptember and November and it was definately 72 hours then as I remember my hotels doing it for for my return.

Definately seems to be 8 days now though (unless travelling to/from Geneva?!)

With budget airlines you can check-in for both legs of your journey. For commercial airlines you can only check for your out-going leg as "on-line check-in" is only opened between 24h and 30h prior to the flight (KLM-Air France - North West - Delta - Aeroflot etc)

I'm not going to check-in online when I fly to Los Angeles with Air Canada on Friday.

The reason for this is that last year when we went to Canada we (my husband and I) didn't know anything about being able to check-in online and so, on our return to UK arrived at Halifax Airport in Nova Scotia at 9pm, 3 hours before our midnight flight, to find out that the plane was overbooked by 3 places.
Staff were asking people if they would accept $500 Air Canada vouchers to fly on the next available flight. So we both said yes, along with another man, and the plane went without us. BUT... we were booked on the next flight at 6am and we were upgraded too! What a fantastic flight... well worth the 6 hour delay!

So, fingers crossed for Friday that us not checking-in online on Friday brings us a nice start to our 2 week stay with my sister in California.

Well, we've thought about that... We are due out on the 1st Air Canada flight of the day and we have a 6 hour stopover at Toronto Airport enroute to Los Angeles. There are another 7 flights to 'Los Angeles' throughout the day via Toronto or Vancouver that would get me to LA at either the same time, about 2 hours later or a bit earlier via Vancouver with only a couple of hours waiting at the airport.

Although yes it could happen, it would be really bad customer service with Air Canada to not fit us on one of those later flights. There are still flights available to purchase on their website today so I'm still not going to check-in online. What happens to all the people who don't have a computer/internet acces or don't know how to work a computer!

I've also told my sister that I'll send her a message on Facebook should there be any changes and she will be able to alter the time she arrives to pick us up. She lives about a 2 hour drive from LA airport.

    Wish us luck!

What would happen if you check-in online but then for whatever reason didn't make it to the airport in time?

I think I've seen too many airport programmes on telly where the late passengers are crying at the check-in desk begging to be let on a closed flight.
