advice on blackberry curve 8520

Options
There are some great deals out at the moment for the Blackberry 8250 and I'm on a budget and I'm really keen on being able to surf the internet and check email, etc when out and about. However, I'm very untechnically minded and worried that its lack of 3G(which to be honest I don't really understand) means it wouldn't do these things effectively. Can anyone advise me whether it would be a mistake to go for the 8250? Thanks in advance:)

It has wifi and gprs/edge, depending where you are, there maybe no 3g service to use anyway, checking email will be fine when out and about, surfing the net is not ideal on a smartphone at the best of times irrespective of connection.

I have the 3G model (9700) which is more expensive. My advice to you if you are on the budget is to get the 8250. They are pretty much the same phone, both new models. Yes the 8520 doesn't have 3G but you will only miss that if you 'surf' the internet daily. For example if you are on a train for 2 x 30 mins a day and you browse the web on your phone, then it may be worth getting a 3G phone. I assume many just do it every now and then, and for them I cant see why the 9700 is necessary unless cash isnt a problem.

Good luck, both good phones. With a 2G phone, push email and all blackberry services will be fine.

Is surfing the net on a smartphone not ideal because it is so slow?

Surfing the internet on a 3G smartphone will never be as fast as a fixed line broadband in your house like Virgin Media or BT broadband. There is a noticeable difference though from a 2G smartphone and a 3G one. For example a 2G smartphone isn't going to ever let you stream a video, while a 3G one will let you see some low quality videos and stream music. Again, these are things not needed by all.
