So am I right in thinking that if I buy a freesat card off ebay it will work in my existing Sky box?2008 Comping ChallengeWon so far - £3010 Needed - £230Debt free since Oct 20040

Yep, we got a box from freeecycle, plugged it in to the existing sat line, plugged the card in, called up the number on the letter that came with it and bobs your uncle!!There are times when parenthood seems nothing but feeding the mouth that bites you Peter De VriesDebt free by 40 (27/11/2016)0

Believe it or not you can live without a television set. We got rid of ours some years ago, and only then did we start to live.
An alternative is to only use the TV to watch videos and dvds, then you will not have to pay for Sky, and you will not need a TV licence.
I should warn you that if you take the latter course, it is fraught with legal pitfalls, (a typical one is that if you have a VCR that can be plugged into an aerial to receive broadcasts, you will need a colour licence); so it is best not to let in the guy from the TV licencing at all - they have absolutely no right of access. (We also found that baiting the TV licensing people is an enjoyable past-time - much better than watching television, I can tell you.)

Alternatively, keep the sky and get free sky broadband like this http://broadband.sky.com/flash.htm.There are times when parenthood seems nothing but feeding the mouth that bites you Peter De VriesDebt free by 40 (27/11/2016)0

Thing is though I already got rid of my car to help me with my finances which is more than most people on here will do to help them get out of debt. And seeing as I got myself out of debt and paid off my mortgage I'm sure I'm allowed the little luxury of a TV2008 Comping ChallengeWon so far - £3010 Needed - £230Debt free since Oct 20040 -
Hello
Actually I think that you might not need to buy a new freesat card - I think that if you stop the sky subscription, your existing card will work for the free channels. I have an excontract card and it works fine to receive bbc1-4, itv, c4, c5 and a few others (don't think ukgold though).
Rachel (generally a lurker but thought I could save you buying an extra card which you might not need).0 -
Rachel you just received your first thanks :beer:2008 Comping ChallengeWon so far - £3010 Needed - £230Debt free since Oct 20040

i agree with Rachel71, my card is the original contract one and I get a lot of channels. It's actually surpising how many you can get (admittedly some of them are rather obscure ones).
I will say I'm impressed by your soa, i wuold like to shave some from mine, but OH not really interested. She doesn't realise it's only a year until i'm 30, and I always promised myself to be a millionaire by then, looks like according to the calculator thingy, i will have to make that 70£2 savers club = £52 - spending money for holiday0 -
If you decide to keep sky, there is a smaller package that you can get.
We now pay £15 a month for 2 packages (although ours is £7.50 at moment for few more months) we have the variety mix which includes UKTV Gold and the kids mix.
