I am so sorry to hear you have lost a friend. I never know what to do or say but I know when I lost my Dad, my Son was only two and Dad was the only person I talked to about certain things. My Uncle (his non-blood) brother, took me under his wing and was so kind to us. I don't think I fully appreciated what a support he was. I don't know if you have that relationship with any of her children but it is a way of offering some support, even a chat and a listening ear with the odd suggestion, obviously no actual substitute but especially as you were close when her children were younger. Her children won't remember some of the things you remember about her (and them). I think it matters when you don't have them to hear someone else's memories of them and you.

Hello greent! I just read up nearly all of the posts since my involuntary absence ... I'm glad I read right to the end, how sad to hear about your friend.I'm glad that your own life is going well, and your family too - the Florida refunds especially! We had a couple of tiny UK caravan holidays booked, and they've refunded no problem.I know this will feel like ages ago, but I just read your comments about Priti Patel - totally agree! There's something "off" about her - maybe it's undiagnosed PTSD, being kicked out of Uganda is going to leave a generational trauma. Alok Sharma isn't like that, and nor is Rishi Sunak - I *really* liked Rishi Sunak when I first heard him, though when I first heard *of* him, I was horrified - billionaire's son in law, tra la, what does he know? But when he was first appointed, he answered questions people asked and then stopped talking, I was *so* impressed. He's learned not to do that any more, which is sad, he's just a run of the mill Tory now (oops, bias showing, I'll shut it).Anyway, as ever, your energy amazes me, even your discombobulation is very short. Hope you're getting your needs met.Striking through the blather ... it's never necessary, and especially not now. Hope you're doing okay.2023: the year I get to buy a car5

Priti Patel was born in London in 1972, her parents emigrated here in the 1960s long before the asians were expelled from Uganda. The reason there is something 'off' about her, is that there is something off about her.My DH on the other hand was smuggled out of Uganda under a blanket, in 1975, as his parents didn't bother getting the right papers for him when he was born out there, and he does not have any kind of PTSD or feel the need to smirk at highly inappropriate times. Priti is as Priti does.So sorry about your friend greent.4/10/22One Year Mortgage Free Yay!

Thank you, all
I've had a couple more teary moments this week - most unlike me - but this is a strange time! I have made a donation to the family (self employed traders, hit hard by c0vid) and sent a message of sympathy/ support/ here I am. That's all I can do for now, I guess. I'll look out some photos and send them at a later date - they have enough to be arranging/ sorting right now.
Love a bit of blather @Karmacat - always welcome to do so on here
We didn't go anywhere that was newly-open yesterday - and no plans to other than the barbers for the males this month (appointment only/ clean down in between clients/ PPE/ massively reduced numbers in shop/ no queues etc). DD and I may book appointments sometime in August - no rush - longer hair means you can get away with it more easily!
I think the situation in the US is rather scary right now - given that we were meant to heading there 2 weeks today....- very glad it's not going ahead from that point of view (although we are all disappointed as well, of course) I can't see us going anywhere this year except maybe to DS1's uni city in Oct half term to visit him and check he's ok (not only did his gf of over 2 years dump him and they live in the same student house but she is now going out with someone else who lives in the house and they are all lovey-dovey over fb00k and have told DS1 they want him to move out of the house - swines
He has no plans to - he said they could look for accom easier than him (they are still living in the student house in the uni city all over Summer) and that he could be civil about the situation and hoped they could. They replied with 'we're not moving' and promptly blocked him on social media/ phone etc
Not much else is happening - DS3 is still going to school 4 days/ week for the next fortnight - although I don't think they're really doing much learning! The planned leavers event is a no-go, so a last-minute alternative has been arranged - nowhere near as good, but at least it's something to mark the occasion. DS2 has just this week left of home learning - although it's technically activities week he still has 4 pieces from last week to finish - so needs to do those before he can start the virtual AW - one of his challenges (set by school) is to spend 2 hours helping around the house doing stuff he doesn't normally do - I shall enjoy that one!He is a very tired lad today, having done a DofE practice walk yesterday - 12 hilly miles (at least - assuming they didn't get lost!) in wind and drizzle with sportier/ fitter/ faster people than him - I am very proud of him for completing it in the allocated time
He has a sore toe (rubbed skin off) so will need to take account of that as a possibility next time (he has good walking boots and socks but is unused to it - taping his little toes up may be the solution)
The garden: the cherries this year were the best ever - juicy, plump and sweet. I managed to pick most of them before the birds got to them too! - mostly eaten, but a few frozen for having with yogurt at some point. Not many strawberries this year, after totally re-doing the strawb bed - but the plants are now sending out masses of runners everywhere, so I fully expect next year to be back to normal levelsCourgettes are coming along - but crazy sun and now wind has stunted them, by looks. Have picked a couple and there are more to pick this coming week
Haven't touched the rhubarb - I guess I should pick some. It doesn't look very happy where it is, so I may move it later in the year. Pear trees are both heavily laden, 1 apple (eating) has what looks to be a decent crop (small/ young tree) and the other (Bramley) has none!
Victoria plum has a good crop for size of tree (again quite young) but the well established huge plum only has a couple - I think we will get rid of that tree over winter - it's huge and doesn't earn it's keep (and the wasps love it) Potatoes are huge (well - the plants are - haven't checked the actual spuds yet) and the carrots are all bushy topped (guinea pig will love those trimmings) so I'd say that it's generally been successful. The 1 pumpkin plant is romping away with lots of flowers - but no mini pumpkins yet. Basil is bushy on the kitchen windowsill and the flat leaved parsley is small
DD's stuff back from uni all has homes/ has been put away. As a result we got rid of an unwanted corner unit too - result - I've been angling to get rid for a couple of yearsSold it at a giveaway price - just glad to get rid and the purchaser was v pleased with their bargain
Several old (and apparently collectible) toys of DS3's have sold on flebay to overseas buyers, so he's happy with his proceeds
and I'm happy with less stuff around!

Sympathies to you, greent, a donation is a lovely idea. Also a good idea to delay sending photos etc just yet - as you say, they'll have so much stuff to sort themselves now.Your poor DS1! Not surprised you'd make an exception and go over there. We won't be going on holiday either - I can't think of anything worse, as I definitely don't feel safe in doing anything like that just yet. The situation in the US seems to be awful, doesn't it - thats the very last place to visit, but so sad you had to put off your lovely trip that you planned and financed so carefully.Your crops sound brilliant, by the way!2023: the year I get to buy a car6
