Help! Lost sound after factory restore.

Need some expert advice from you guys.
Did a factory reset on my old HP Compaq laptop nc 6400, which has worked with one exception.
I can't playback any sound and under control panel for sounds it only seems to register the disc drive and some codecs/capture stuff but no soundcard.
Any ideas as the sound for mp3/dvd was working before restore?

In control panel under system and device manager, do you see anything with an exclamaination mark next to it? You probably have to install/reinstall the drivers for your soundcard.0

Go to "Device manager" - are you missing a audio driver? If so try going to Windows Update and to download the latest ones0

As above, also you may find the chipset drivers for your motherboard are on the restore CD (or a seperate CD if you got one)
Important ones to install are Audio Codecs, and Chipset drivers. If you can't hear DVDs then it's the decoder plug-ins (Microsoft Essentials)Owner of andrewhope.co.uk, hate cars and love them

Under system on control panel for sound, video and game controllers it only shows the following;Audio codecs, legacy audio drivers, legacy video capture devices, media control devices and video codecs. When you right click and check properties it says this device is working properly for each of them, no exclamation marks?0 -
Do a Windows Update and download any critical updates, but also look at the "optional" ones for anything to do with Audio Codecs or Audio Drivers.
Did you PC come with a manufacturer CD, most of them do as they usually come with restore disc and drivers.
Alternatively, you can find your motherboard model and download the drivers off the manufacturer site, you will need the chipset drivers for AudioOwner of andrewhope.co.uk, hate cars and love them

I don't have the cds got the info to restore via HP website and the laptop has been running for a couple of days and has seemed to have downloaded all relevant updates via the windows automatic service.0 -

Crap, I missed this bit.....
Google a search for "Microsoft Essential Codecs" or something like that. Download and install them... I suspect that will fix your problem. Someone here had the same issue where they had sound from Windows but no sound from DVDs.

Downloaded the codecs as suggested but still no sound at all even when looking at video clips online i.e. You Tube.
I think that all the drivers are up to date its just seems to be that there is no soundcard registering on my system since restore. My limited knowledge has reached its limit when it comes to motherboards and chipsets!!
Don't know what the motherboard model is.0 -

Just looked again there is exclamation marks against other devices which are; HP Integrated Module, Mass Storage Controller, PCI Device, PCI Simple Communications Controller and 2 listings for Unknown Device.
Would this be part of the problem?0 -
Could be...so Windows Update did not do anything? Nothing on the HP support website at all? HP.com is usually quite good for drivers...0
