Expect an "Uphill. Both ways" type reply. (Probably a restating of the 28 mile round trip one mentioned in post #210.)

I know (I saw the post you made before you edited it) and, bank issues aside, which we will probably always disagree on, I (genuinely) hope things work out for you.

    Thank you.

Despite *arguments* here, I have nothing against anyone or indeed anyone who has a different view to me - I just feel quite passionate about this one, simply because of the many people who have come to me for help - some of the stories are utter tear-jerkers.

I edited the post in question, as after reading it back it looked like I was going for the simpathy vote, and I also though it was a bit 'open' to post those things ina public forum, so I took them out of the post.

    So, thank you again.

I apologise to you for not living and working in a town.

Where did you get that definition from? It's an interessting one, but \i've always thought it's etymology was from new things. The french word for news is similar, it being les nouvelles See the Online Etymological Ductionary

I honestly cannot remember - maybe a teacher at school some time ago.

It sounds right - the Plural of 'new' I mean.
do you think that it is fair that staff in these branches should have to work unsociable hours

    Yes.
If the banks are so bad, why haven't you moved your accounts to a Building Society?

I did try to get an account with Nationwide by phoning to start with, but they said as it was snowing that I would have to do it another day???, so I did it by post, but after no contact from them after sending all my details I contacted them to find out what was happening and they had no record of the application - including what had happened to my passport and other forms of ID that I took to the branch.

    That was the final straw.

Personal, I do not see "free" banking being axed. What I expect to happen is this:

People you cannot maintain an average balance (say £500, but this is only my opinion I have no basis for this figure), or pay in at least £1000 (possibly £500 [again these figures are my opinion]) a month will be forced to have a basic bank account (which the account providers can't charge for). Those that could meet these criteria will continue to have a "standard" current account (I say standard as these are currently the premium accounts). It may be possible for all accounts held at the same provider to be included in the average balance calculation (or if you have loan/mortgage with them for the average balance/minimum payment to be waived).

People forced into the basic accounts will discover, quite quickly, that they cannot utilise all of the facilities that they have now, as most providers do not allow them on their basic accounts. The current trend in offering "high" interest rates on current accounts will end as the providers will try to retain their profit margins.

I currently work and live in villages. I have previously worked and lived in both a city and a town. I fail to see what you're getting at here since in all 6 places, I've never had problems with access to personal banking. (And, no, I don't need to rely on a car for this)

Then you must just be luckier than I. I have awful problems with banks where I am. I cannot get to them before they close, as they close at least 30 mins before I finish work and only open until midday on Saturdays, and despite what you think, it really is a 28 mile round trip to the nearest bank.

Right I couldn't resist coming back any longer!

I know what dchurch is saying about the banks closing. Mine will cease to exist soon, they are closed more than they are open. However, I have cash machines and internet banking and most importantly my own financial planning, so I know give or take a couple of quid where I am at any one point.

NEVER believe what one person says to you. Surely thats just common sense.

Don't send the cheque out until your sure. Would you go into a store somewhere, and hand over money BEFORE seeing the goods and then once you have handed over the money they bring the goods out from the back?

This seems to go on and on!

Simple scenario (and I'm back tracking again!) is sort yourself out and you won't be charged. Don't take any notice of what a cashier tells you, don't take any notice of when your wages *should* appear in your bank account. Take notice of when it actually DOES appear, THEN issue a cheque or whatever.

    Common sense? No?

Then, to be quite honest, there would be no point in me having a bank at all apart from to have somewhere to pay my wages. I'd prefer to be paid in cash.

If I'd wanted to become a banker, I would have done so.

I didn't, but I expect those who did, to actually do so.

Isn't that what happens at Argos?
