Doorstep lenders

2 years ago I finally paid off a loan that my ex took out in my name from Eccles finance (doorstep lender, extortionate interest rates) I have just received a business card that one of the 'agents' pushed through informing me that I should give them a ring as they can offer me more money!!

I have filed the card away in the bin where it rightly belongs but I have to admit if it had come last week I may have been tempted by it, although not for long! Looking back I can't believe all the money they have had out of me and I'm so glad I'm out of it all now!

Anybody else had dealings with doorstep lenders that want you back as a customer?

This situation is not confined to the doorstep lenders. It can happen to any company you've bought from before.

This approach is "unsolicited" i.e. uninvited, except that you probably gave them an "invitation" to contact you when you signed up for the original loan (you probably had to tick a box to opt-out of the invitation).

I think that, under the Data Protection Act, you can write to them and ask them to remove you from all future mailing lists. Essentially, they would not be allowed to contact you without your permission.

So .. write to them and tell them that you no longer want to be kept informed of their products & services (ahem!).

Allow them a few weeks to action your request but if they then contact you, write again and threaten to report them to the Information Commissioner

I have some large debts, and am working with the CAB (and the help of this site) to sort it al out, even now after months of hard work and letter writing, and dispite the "lenders" knowing that I have "problems" they still write asking if I want another credit card and / or loan... they never seem to stop,,

Thanks to you both for your replies!

I shall write to them to tell them to remove me from their list, there's no way I will be going back to them, I'd rather sell my soul first!!!

isgman, you're right they never stop, luckily I have developed a lot of willpower since coming onto this site so yes the temptation is there to take them up on their offer but I never will!

Ahh yes provident are another lovely lot!! My friend was with them and was bombarded with more loans to pay off the last bit of her latest loan, it's a shame that some people do have no other choice but to use these companies, I used to think I was getting a great deal with eccles finance till I wised up, they make it sound so simple!

I dont want to sound like im defending them. However when your credit rating is knackered and you need sa small loan for a fridge, washer etc etc... for some people they are the only people who will lend you you. Yeah the interest rate is very high, but when you think its a cash business that is always much more expensive, they have to pay field staff, petrol each week for xx amount of weeks...

As I said, Im certainly not glamourising them, but if desparate needs are there, then sometims people have to come to desperate solutions.

P.S - no am not an agent, please go nice on me !!
