To be honest I wouldn't even trust it as a mist coat - the last thing you would want to do with lovely new plaster would be to make a mistake. As I said earlier I had some of Wickes own label emulsion which I watered down - I'd had it for over a year and it was still perfect. It was a 10L bucket and was quite cheap from what I remember.

The only reason I went for the asda stuff was out of convenience - Asda is quite close and my only mode of transport is my (push)bike. I'll put up with the sweat and pain pedalling back from screwfix today

Is the consensus to use Wickes then - or a big brand such as Dulux or Crown? Is there much of a difference between the big brands and Wickes?

    My last 2 cents...
I've found 'own brand' paint from all the large DIY outlets - B&Q, Wickes, Homebase etc to be absolutely fine and i think its because they have a reputation to try and keep in the sector - asda and the like do not.

Alternatively yes go for a big brand paint like dulux/crown as you'll have plenty of comeback if its not up to scratch - I wouldn't say there is a huge difference between them and the DIY store 'own brands' but you will possibly get a wider colour range (don't believe the 'one coat', 'surface smoother' or 'specially designed for fresh plaster' type claims, just have a look at any of the trade forums).

I've used Leyland trade primers, gloss, enamels & emulsions and have never been let down - if I was going to make a recommendation it would be to go for that.
cheap brand-x paint is a false economy in terms of money and sometimes more importantly time.

I've certainly learned my lesson - the local council uplifted the asda stuff this morning haha! That's £4 I could have spent on beer!
  • There isn't really much of a difference at all, Wickes changed changed paint supplier over a year ago now and have the same supplier as B&Q's own brand paint - Ostendorf.

I've worked for Wickes for 3 years so if there's anything else you need, just ask :) x
  • Homebase's Home of Colour emulsion is very good, covers really well and is only £10.99 for 5L

    Part number 777003 or add "h t t p : / / w w w ." to

    homebase.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?langId=110&storeId=10151&partNumber=777003&c_3=3%7Ccat_14114949%7CInterior+Paint%7C14114976&c_2=2%7Ccat_16849219%7CPaint%7C14114949&c_1=1%7Ccategory_root%7CDecorating%7C16849219

Avoid their cheaper value range as it, like all other value paints, is a false economy.
