ASDA Matt emulsion

Asda are doing a dealover the easter weekend, 2 5L tubs white matt emulsion for £7.

This would be ideal to finish off our bedroom. Has anyone ever used ASDA emulsion? What is it like?

12 months ago I would have gone for Dulux trade, but with now being on dole and just keeping head above water, this is about the best I can afford, and it's just a make do and neaten up job, till I get back into work and can afford the real stuff.

If Emulsion say on the tin "Stir thoroughly before use" i never buy it, its too thin and goes everywhere.

Homebase own brand emulsion is two 2.5l cans for £16 at the moment, its also a 15% off weekend, so £13.60 for two (£6.80 for one) - plus there's triple nectar points available.

I'm so annoyed that I felt the need to register and post to warn people about Asda emulsion. I bought one of the 5L tubs of matt white at the weekend and it was a total waste of time and money. Sure it is cheap and it probably serves me right for being cheap but this stuff is beyond a joke.

The story - I have just had my ceiling skim plastered and used the last of my Wickes own brand white which I had watered down, as the first mist coat. I've just painted half of the ceiling using Asda emulsion and there is actually no discernible difference to the ceiling. I cant actually tell where i stopped painting! I've probably used less than half a litre but the rest is going in the bin.

I'm off to buy some Leyland trade from screwfix or the like - sure its 6 times the price but It will actually paint the ceiling and not just add some sort of translucent coating!

Lesson learned - hied my warning, when it comes to paint you really do get what you pay for!

As mentioned in another thread, I bought some cheap supermarket emulsion a couple of years ago, thin, not great coverage and when I came to use some more several months later it'd 'gone off' and stank, fit only for the bin.
  • I haven't used the Asda emulsion but have used the "your home" quick drying satin which they sell in Asda for about £6.00 for a 750ml tin.
I bought some a couple of weeks ago as it was half price at £3.00 and thought it would be fine as it was brilliant white and I was painting over white anyway.
Wrong  it is total rubbish, the consistency is just slightly thicker than water and if I had painted over anything other than white, would more than likely have needed about 5 coats of it !

I used some white emulsion from Wilkinsons Basics range (yellow tub, great price). It was to paint over a ceiling that had been painted magnolia. Sadly it was a false economy - about 3 coats later the ceiling was still streaky with the original magnolia showing through. With things like this it makes sense to buy a decent brand.

LOL @ this thread. I'm off to Brewers in the morning for some frozen peas, a loaf of bread and a bunch of bananas.

    Cheers

So would the Asda one be ok to use as a mist coat on new plaster then use a better one on top?
