Why use an adapter jam a rusty nail in to the earth of the socket jam it down to open the live a neutral parts and wack in your euro plug ;p

Correct, they fit either way in Europe, so no problem.

May I ask how the OP came to own an item fitted with a Euro Plug?

Retailers in the UK are not allowed to sell them without an adaptor.
