Problems uninstalling AVG ......

Options
I've discovered that the reason my computer was so slow was the fact that I had AVG 6.0 installed. Having removed it, it's now back up to speed. This now leaves me with another problem and I'd be grateful for any help :

I can't seem to completely uninstall AVG from the Install/
Uninstall Programs box. It throws up a message "Cannot inint language file" (although it's disappeared from the box). Also, on booting up, a page appears saying something like "system.ini is looking for a device that's missing" (and quotes Grisoft AVG web address). Looking on the net, this does seem to be a common problem, but I can't find the answer anywhere!

Thanks.

Try doing Start > Run > type msconfig then hit enter

see on the system.ini tab if anything looks like it might be the culprit and remove the cross next to it?

Thanks, but couldn't correct it. Nothing looked like an AVG file in "Systemini", though I found 3 AVG files in "Start Up" and deleted them. Hoped this would correct the problem, but it didn't

    Thanks anyway, any other ideas?

Firstly, here is a thread that may help; http://buildtolearn.com/web-7339.html

    United Kingdom

    AVG UK

    Sales Fax: +44-(0)1636-707738
    Support: https://www.avguk.com/support.html

Though, it seems there is no support for the FREE Edition.

    Some suggestions;

Use SpyBot 'Tools', on to 'System StartUp' and make sure any entries linked to AVG Grisoft are not ticked.
also use ctrl-alt-delete to shut avg from running in background under processes

Do a search for AVG & Grisoft with the Windows 'Find' tool and delete them all .

You could also try turning off sytem restore.(I don't think you have this.

    How to install/uninstall AVG components?

If you want to install or uninstall AVG components (e-mail plug-in for example), you have to run AVG installation using SETUP.EXE from AVG7 directory (directory with installed AVG) or using a downloaded installation file (http://www.grisoft.com -> Download section).

Running the installation process recognises the existence of installed AVG7 and the “Add/Remove Components“ option is offered.

Reinstalling and using the Add/Remove option is necessary for example for the case that there is a new supported e-mail client (Outlook/Eudora/The Bat!) installed on the PC after the installation of AVG7.
(May be similar for AVG 6)

    Goodluck

Thanks Donnie. It does say on their web site though that they will not give you any support if the problem is regarding the FREE AVG anti-virus software (which it is). They suggest looking at their FAQ's, but of course, there's nothing there about uninstalling .....

I'll drop them a line though and see if I have any luck.

    Hi Donnie,

I'm a bit "lost" by your last post. I'll have to re-install Spybot (deleted it as having problems).

Used "find" to trace all AVG files and it won't let me delete the majority and they're coming up as "recycled" files (whatever these are!).

By the way, just had a reply from my email to AVG and they're refusing to help as it was a free version.

    'll start with Spybot ...

Did you look at the 'buildtolearn' thread?

'recycled files' are probably ones that are in the 'Recycle Bin'. Delete them from there.

Use something like McAfee Uninstaller to clean up loose fragments on your computer; http://www.majorgeeks.com/download1537.html

    See PM.

Reinstall SpyBot & Tea Timer. They are useful.

The "recyled" files did not go into the recycle bin ... I had a look. I tried to delete these files from the "find" box and they promptly reappeared!

What I've done is re-install AVG ... it's corrected the boot-up problem. Word is running a little slow again, but nothing like as bad as before and I now have a normal.dot file and my Word documents are no longer being duplicated. It is still "freezing" occasionally, but I'm in the process of getting rid of some programs I no longer want to try to free up some space, so I'll see if things improve.

'll have a look at the other things you've recommended.

    Cheers,

    :-*

As I suggested before, use SpyBot 'Tools' and then 'System StartUp' and 'disable' the processes you would like to, by removing the 'tick.(it can easily be reversed by replacing the 'tick'.

Then restart the computer to see how it behaves without the processes starting with Windows.

Anything relating to AVG/Grisoft is already blocked within Spybot, so presumably I've done this somewhere along the way by some other method.

These are the messages I'm getting when re-booting :-

    First page :

If you have deleted this file on purpose, try uninstalling the associated applications using its uninstall or other set up programs.

    c:progra~1\grisoft\avg6\avgcore.vxd

    Second page :

Cannot find a device file that may be needed to run Windows or a Windows application.

The Windows registry or system.ini files refer to this device file, but it no longer exists.

    c:progra~1\grisoft\avg6\avgfsh.vxd

    Any further ideas??
