The promise was that they would be linked to RPI which meant they should have gone down but the deferred pension remained the same and did not go down, therefore, in real terms, it went up.
When was the last time anyone was given an extra, contra-contractual payment like this. Pensioners should be very, very grateful and thankful and stop moaning about this.
And yes I have a direct interest in this and I was extremely thankful when I heard the announcement.

Agreed we are very lucky to be getting any increase. The ambiguity over no increase in deferred pension comes from the wording in the government booklet given at the time of deferring, which says: -:

'Your extra State Pension will be paid to you for the rest of your life and will be increased annually in the same way as the rest of your State Pension'.

The rest of your state pension is increased in line with inflation. This was -1.9%. If you really want your BSP and deferred pension increased by this amount just give the overpayment back to the chancellor. He might even say thank you for giving him his gift horse back.

The rise in the state pension is always more under the Tories but so is inflation.

I believe it was Maggie who changed the link from the wages and prices index to the less good RPI.

I cannot say that I have actually noticed this reduction in prices.

Pretty much everything we have to pay for has gone up.

    House insurance up
    Car insurance up
    Travel insurance up
    Fuel up
    Food up
    Car servicing up
    NT sub up
    Breakdown cover up

    So what is going down?

Our pensions increase will be a total of £3.36 per week.

My water & sewage rates went down for 2010 / 2011 [Southern Water]

My car Service went down [small one man garage]
Eight out of ten owners who expressed a preference said their cats preferred other peoples gardens

Just had npower bill; we are £500 in credit!!!

Monthly d/d gone down to £35.
Got cheap breakdown from AA, but otherwise we would have used our Tesco vouchers to join the RAc like before.

They have been overcharging you, and you've let them do it. the £500 is your money and the reduction in your DD to £35 is them giving you your money back - slowly.
They know how much your power cost in the last year divided by 12 is what your DD should be and get a cheque of them for the £500 otherwise this time next year your DD will go back up and you will feel bad about it.
Npower is a power company who should supply you with power and charge you after consumption not a bank which looks after your money.

  • Yes, they will give you your money back, but you have to ask for it.

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton
