Hmmm, what would you do?

Hi,

I sold something last week & the buyer has contacted me to say it doesnt work.
It was tested before it was sent, but I know that there are times that these things happen & to stop any hassle I have asked that they return it so I can refund.

I have 2 issues:

1. I withdrew the money from my Paypal account so from what I read in the Paypal help section, does this mean that I can issue a refund, but it wont clear immediately? Does anyone know how long that may take?

2. The buyer wanted me to send him a cheque refund (err no!) & then they will fund the return postage themself & will be willing to help in any claim via the courier company.
My other half inisists this was working & has a feeling it may be something to do with user error that has broken it. Return postage is going to be pretty steep & I know that I dont have to pay for it, but I know the buyer is now going to ask that I do so.
I now am unsure as to what to do as its feeling a bit dodgy to me. I will definitely refund via paypal, but do I also refund the return postage, or do I risk a neg & not refund the return postage? What would you do?

You only refund once you have the item back, definately not before that point, so that gives you the time to get it from your account back into paypal

Go to any shop, anywhere.. they'll only refund via the same method that is paid to them.
    Almost..debt free.. :P:money:
  • I tried refunded with zero balance in my paypal and it wouldn't let me, I had to add funds from my bank account first.

Thats what I wondered. I did a bank transfer yesterday, but it says it will take between 7 & 9 days :(. I dont want to annoy the buyer, but I have a feeling they wont believe me about it.

If you do not want to give the buyer a chance to be annoyed, if you know someone with a paypal account and cleared funds they could send you a personal payment.

Unfortunately no one that I would feel comfortable asking has a Paypal account.

Buyer is not happy, I have told them that I will initiate a refund as soon as the item is returned. I thought I was doing the right thing & warned them that it may take a few days for it to clear.N ow they are again asking I send a cheque.

I think I will definitely get a negative with this one, such a shame as Ive been selling bits & bobs for a few years & never had one. I dont sell enough to be able to get my stars back up (all on 4.9 at the moment) :(

No, the buyer has to return it to you and enter the postage details if they have made a paypal claim. Only once it is received do you refund. They pay the return postage.

And if they leave a neg just reply saying 'buyer wanted me to refund by cheque, I refused, item was fine' or something to that effect (keeping within ebay terms and conditions, someone with more experience will be able to advise). Keep all the emails too, you may be able to get the neg removed. If not, it doesn't matter. 1 neg won't stop me buying from someone, I will read the feedback and reply and then decide, there is a LOT of scams on ebay.

This is just getting worse, I have received another e-mail:

You don’t need to refund by PayPal – you just need to pay me.

If you’ve got a bank account go see the bank and ask them how to do it – they can give you a cheque or a money order or whatever?
If not, go to the post office and ask them how to do it with a postal order?
(!!!! - I just been to the post office specially to post it right back to you)

I can’t wait 9 days and anyway I don’t really want it in my PayPal account because it means I have to pay them a fee to get the money out.

Let me know what you are going to do or I will have to issue a claim formally

    I have replied with:

I will & need to refund by Paypal as that is how the original payment was made.

Please feel free to start a claim, it is probably better that it goes through the proper channels.

Paypal costs nothing to transfer funds to your bank.

And a bounced cheque costs YOU money!

I know! Ive already explained that once, but the buyer thinks Im dodgy & telling porkies!

I would understand if they were a first timer, but they have 100+ feedback & have also sold things in ebay themselves!

Im fed up now, I have spent most of the day trying to sort this, its making me feel like poo & that Im a bad person. Nothing is worth that feeling.

To think I was debating about refunding the return costs aswell. Stuff that!
