Dont Believe I was so stupid, had a mortgage protection ( sickness/unemployment) only found out when i had cancelled it last month.Having only being paying it unknowingly for 10yrs approx.it started when my wife passed away 2002.Thought My Mortgage would be payed in full but when my wifes brother called the company they told him my wife had cancelled the policy.I thought it odd as it was in joint name.As i didnt claim when my late wife was taken ill with cancer and unable to work for 4 yrs.So She was sick and out of work. The problem now is as i didnt claim at the right time and have just cancelled the policy the company concerned say they have no information on their system not even a policy No.
Any Ideas Or Help I Would Really Appreciate. I want to hurt this company now for their ignorance and mine.I Have since Re-married and i am not normally an angry person HONEST.

What are you claiming for?

I dont think the mortgage would have been paid off in full though, doesnt it just tide you over for a certain length of time, I thought it was only an endowment policy that would pay out in the event of a death
why did you're BIL ring the company, I doubt very much that they would have spoken to him, if it was a joint claim they would have only dealt with a policyholder
You're best bet is dig out you're paperwork and ring them direct, maybe even go back to the person who sold you the mortgage protection0 -
I take it you are trying to claim for the time when your wife was ill for four years?
Is that right?

Go back through your bank statements and work out when the payments stopped. If your wife did cancel it as claimed, you'll be able to tell when. The ability of skinny old ladies to carry huge loads is phenomenal. An ant can carry one hundred times its own weight, but there is no known limit to the lifting power of the average tiny eighty-year-old Spanish peasant grandmother.0

Most policies state that you have to claim (or give notice) within 14 to 30 days of being diagnosed sick. If you dont do it depending on the policy you might default your rights to claim or the time inbetween being sick and giving notice will be lost and not paid.
I would write to them (registered mail) with details of your late wifes personal details and when you thought the policy was taken out. If you have any sort of documentation send in a copy of it as well.
A lot of insurance companies have merged and/or sold on their protection books (clients) to other companies. You need to give them as much information as possible so that they can find your details.
I also cannot believe they would have spoken to your brother inlaw. If the policy was in joint names it should mean you might have to sign a cancellation document but some insureres might think if one partner stops the policy the other would know.
Some policies say that the simple act of stopping the direct debit will be enough to stop the policy so if they do not follow up with a letter how will the other partner know this is happening?
It really is a grey area and first of all you need to collate all of the information on the policy. However because you did not claim at the time your wife was sick and so many years have passed since then and the policy was cancelled I dont think you will be able to claim retrospectively.0 -
