I don't like Office 2007!

  • I hear Microsoft are reconsidering the ribbon for Office 2013.

Where did you hear that? It will be a cold day in Hell before MS drops the ribbon.
  • I didn't say they were going to drop it, they are looking at the UI and what they need to do.

Where did I hear it? Our rollout to thousands of users of Office 2010 means we work closely with Microsoft. They are aware of the feedback from users and companies like ours.

  • Unfortunately (and this is no dig at you) MS allegedly listened closely to their users before they brought the ribbon into being in Office 2007. Last time I was in Redmond there was an almost complete inability to appreciate alternate (ie classic UI = good, ribbon UI = bad) viewpoints on the user interface design. I doubt they will materially change the interface in Office 15.

Listened closely to users! Ha ha.

It's the arrogance of Microsoft that amuses me.
I doubt that anyone there has tabulated the clicks required for an operation before and after the changeover.
They'll just tell you that the ribbon is better and if you don't agree then you're just not appreciating it yet.

The only software that's impressed me recently has all been freeware.

I've just got windows 7 and find it awful. I've unistalled office 2010 and replaced it with the much simpler but perfectly adequate 2003.
Outlook email on W7 is like mission control - truly pathetic. You want to print out a sent email - no printer icon - endless other options and tabs - few of which Ill ever need - but no printer - classic. I found after a while you have to right click the sent email in the emails sent list to bring up a print. Why can designers never think how end users think?

I've been using Office 07 for a few months now and I still think it's worse than 2003.

    Another example:
You cannot resize a data label, an axis title, or a chart title, even
though it looks like a real text box with eight little resizing handles
when it's selected. This is the case manually and programmatically

I've had Office 2007 since it came out, and although I've more or less got used to it, I don't particularly like it, although it suffices. I'll be upgrading when I can to the latest version.

If you know anybody whose a student you should be able to get the latest version at a steal.

Whatever the pluses and minuses of Office 2007 Microsoft have certainly made it tougher for many users. Example: I have 2007 and save my files in the docx format. They can be read by 2003 fans but only if they download the free tool to do so. Unfortunately lots of individual users (and a surprising number of organisations) just have not done that and fire off emails complaining that the document attached cannot be read.
If they had to have a new format(and I can understand why) they might at least have offered the 2007 converter pack with Windows updates automatically rather than leaving it to the users, some of who don't know how to get/install it.
  • Having used the 2010 office Beta for some time now - compared to my usual 2003 version......
and having commented earlier in the year on this thread on the crap 'ribbon'......

and after having used it for 6 months......
I'm now reverting with grateful thanks to Office 2003.
No, I haven't "got used" to it - the ribbon that is.
I do recall that there was a firm providing an "addin" to 2007 which removed the ribbon and indeed did provide the classic view: I suspect they will do good business if they do one for Office 2010.

The change to the file format in office 2007 from .doc to .docx was/is annoying. If persons send me stuff in .docx format they simply get an email back requesting them to resend in 2003 format if they wish me to read/comment on them. Seems to work!

The ribbon is excellent, it just takes getting used to. The main problem I find is when switching between 2003 and 2007 because I have to retrain my memory which menu to go into whereas the ribbon has everything at a glance. The main problem with the ribbon is remember which sub menu the option you want is under

Personally I prefer it, I hated it but I love it now. If you are finding it difficult or hating it I suggest taking up a college course. You'd benefit on it
