I don't like Office 2007!

  • Carry on then. So far it's just more of things without any evidence that anyone didn't have enough already.

None of those things are of genuine use to someone like myself who wants Excel for stable and quick numerical data manipulation and presentation. It might appear better to a casual user who wants some simple charts with a small data set and a requirement to make it look nice.

I've run out of rows a few times in 10 years. It's not a big deal - I just start another series.
I've never run out of formula space and I've never met anyone who has.
More colours and styles is not worth anything to me if it makes the update times slower.
I've got a typical chart here and it generates the warning that it might be slow to update when I go to add a single black border to it.
It's taking almost 1s to update the chart when I change the font size of the title.

I've made my own custom chart template. The display menu shows a meaningless icon for each template. There's no way of making it list the names that I can see.

Someone else has had the same problem.

I'm not too bothered by the ribbon, though I think the classic menu was a worldwide standard that worked well.

    .
Alt worked with the old menus though.
How has the ribbon made clicking with the mouse obsolete if you don't use alt keys or the Ctrl+letter kets?

How do you use the ribbon without a mouse?

Most intensive users learn keyboard shortcuts. Mouse clicking is slow compared with keyboard presses.

There are more keyboard shortcuts available in Office 2007 than in any previous version. The fact that the graphical menu options are presented in a ribbon rather than a toolbar does not change whether they can be represented by a keyboard shortcut or not.

When a previously used feature is no longer available then there's nothing to get used to.
Over the years I've adapted to many changes of software in various applications. I'm not too bothered by the ribbon. It's not as good as microsoft like to think it is, but it's tolerable.

Missing features though, I keep finding more.
They binned the feature for moving data on a chart and the cell auto updating with the value. That was useful. Turns out that some organisations used this in critical applications and they're not happy now.

I've had a look round via google and it looks like a significant proportion of heavy Excel users have gone back to Excel 2003 if they have the choice. Those who don't have any choice have just developed another series of hacks, add ins and lateral thinking to get round the biggest hurdles.

Nice anecdotal. Meanwhile in actual fact:

Increased sales of Office 07 doesn't invalidate my point. Heavy users might be a small proportion of the total. In which case maybe Excel is becoming the wrong tool for the sort of work they do.

Firstly, the report is over 2.5 years old and secondly, with respect, it is a blatant puff-piece. Thirdly, for a marketing professional [Swenson - someone presumably familiar with advancing statistically sound arguments] to attempt to suggest that because there had been no increased sales of boxed copies of XP the "downgrade phenomenon" could be dismissed as "overblown" is laughable.

The argument is based on a classic syllogistic form and by necessity creates and relies on a logical fallacy as part of its conclusion i.e. that those computer users who dislike Office 2007 and downgrade to XP can only do so by purchasing a brand-new, boxed copy of it completely setting aside the possibility that they might simply re-use the software they had upgraded from (XP) in the first place.

    Hardly fact is it?

Aside from all of that I don't use any Redmond Bloatware.
My very sincere apologies for those hoping to request off-board assistance but I am now so inundated with requests that in order to do justice to those "already in the system" I am no longer accepting PM's and am unlikely to do so for the foreseeable future (August 2016). :(

I've just found another example of an annoyance.
On Word 03 I could make the drawing shapes box into a toolbox that was permanently visible on the screen and could be dragged to any location. This was very useful for quick drawing work. From what I've seen so far, the ribbon closes the drop down as soon as I use a shape, so I have to reopen the drop down each time I want to add a shape.

  • I hate Microsoft Office full stop!

I binned it several months back after discovering Open Office which is completely free!

I can't post links as yet, but just go to Google and type Open Office.
