it was only after setting everything up i realised my phone had to be plugged into the actual livebox and the only way people could contact me was with a new number! either that or switch the lead when i want to make a call and back again for people to use my home number
not happy, or was i naive? do all the free call offers use the same method?

It specifically says, use a spare phone to connect to your livebox.
Any VOIP service works the same way, the advantage of livebox is that you don't have to have your PC on. You are also getting a second line with another number.
In any event you should always have your main phone connected directly to your landline for emergencies, especially during power cuts. That gum you like is coming back in style.0
