    Dylanuk appears you were correct!!

I have been given a £3500 credit card from Egg, I thought it was strange for Sainsbury to reject me outright. I checked and they didn't credit search me that I can see, I think they literally rejected me on the basis of the Halifax card.

    Thanks alot for your help!

hello, sorry to hijack this thread but I'm in the same boat - applied for sainsbury's card as you get 1000 (?) bonus points for spending £500 in the first 3 months. As I need a new boiler I thought this was the perfect time to apply.

Just like gtaz I got the standard letter refusing me the Am -Ex card. So I have checked my file:

    total credit available £10,800
total usage £300 (this was paid at begining of March)
no of accounts overdue - 0
    no of missed/late payments - 0
no of time credit report check in last 3 months - 1
as above in last year - 5 (3 store cards to get discounts now closed & car insurance which surprised me as I pay in one lump)
no of credit accounts including settled - 23 - nearly fell off chair!

The last one bothered me so I checked it and in 2005 / 2006 I had lots of 0% cards that I paid in full at end of free period and then cancelled card.

    So my questions are:
how long do credit accounts stay on your file?
is it worth me trying to get any card with a 0% period?
Also would reducing the credit limit I have with exsisting halifax card help? I have about 8k limit but only need 1k.

It doesn't really matter, but this is the sainsburys card and it sounds like you're talking about the Nectar american express card.

Credit accounts stay on your file for 6years.

Also would reducing the credit limit I have with exsisting halifax card help?
Possibly it will. How does the total amount of credit you have compare to your income?

That's a good point, probably too high is the answer.

Applied for a Sainsbury's credit card as I thought I would put my goceries on it and earn extra nectar points. Got rejected. Perhaps it is because I have only been in the country 4 years, even though I own my own home mortgage free, have no debts, have income of over £27,000pa, and have a fair bit of savings. However I have held an HSBC premier credit card for over 4 years in UK and I would have thought that would give me a good record. Am also on the electoral roll. I've written to ask them why I was rejected.

That doesn't make any difference (or shouldn't). I have not been born in the UK and I have 7 cards.

So it looks like lots of people are getting rejected for the Sainsburys card... Hmmm, I just wanted to apply for it.. not sure I should now.

Anyone here who was accepted for it?

Just wanted to point out that savings do not come into it at all. They search your "credit" report - only history about your borrowing and repayments. They cannot even see whether you have any cash saved up or not.
