  • If you need to have a Shogun then you can certainly afford to pay £400 to keep the fuel guzzling beast on the road.

If your worried about the road tax do you really need the car....

I'm a bit confused by all these claims of legitimate use of Shoguns.

Because sometimes, due to the attitudes of certain people, maybe like the poster below you, we feel we have to justify ourselves... :o

i drive a shogun, its an 06 plate and i pay £450pa road tax for it, it drinks lots of diesel, if the sandal weavers dont like it then tough, the yoghurt knitters can go swing as well, when they realise that all this global warming is just rubbish to get more taxes from them they will find something else to complain about and leave me alone, some people will believe anything they are told in the media, which is sensationalised tosh designed to sell papers

If the Govt were that bothered about global warming, they'd destroy every cow in the UK. Methane more potent greenhouse gas than co2!

....but does anyone know what's planned for 2011?
This system may change for everyone in the future - who can possibly tell? If anyone does they will be the a Chancellor of the Exchequer in a future government for sure.

VED rates are usually mentioned in the budget. This year they were not so the higher emission cars registered pre 23/3/06 are still grouped in Band K.

    Await the next budget.

But I suspect that they will be grabbing as much money as they can from whoever they think can afford it and would not hold out much hope for big engined vehicles being cheap to tax in the future... although I wonder if they may rase more by encouraging their use and taking the tax on fuel instead! :)

OP, I know the moment is passed but as you were looking at a 51 plate you may as well have gone a few months older and had the reassurance of a fairly consistent VED rate.
Also be aware that many imported cars regardless of age are based on the old system of engine size, so it may be worth looking at imported Pajeros (the Japanese version of a Shogun).

Thanks, I was toying with the idea of seeing if I could find an X-reg version.

I'm not sure that's correct, what you're saying about imported cars, is it? I thought that they all now went on their original registration date, so will be based on engine size if X-reg or older, or based on emissions if newer?

I don't know much about it, just that my hubby bought an imported 2005 Nissan which was registered over here in 2007, and he had to pay £400 p.a. road tax on it. He sold it to his brother then as the tax was too expensive, and in the new budget (just gone) they've changed the rules so that it goes on original reg date, not import date, so it's dropped back into band K now for being a pre-2006 car, and is now only £235 p.a. to tax!!

Yes that's what I was thinking about an X reg.
It does seem to be the case for some cars, I think it has something to do with SVA testing. Some imported cars won't have CO2 emissions data.
A while ago I was lusting after US imported Chevy suburbans, approx 2005 models, and they were all taxed as being 'over 1549cc' so £215 or whatever it is.
