VED for 2001 - 2006 high emission cars

Sorry if this has been covered before - I did a search and couldn't find it.

I'm thinking of buying a 51-plate Shogun (yes I do have a legitimate use for it), but I'm concerned about the road tax.

It's been the case that "All cars registered between March 2001 and March 2006 that produce more than 225g/km CO2, will temporarily join Band K in 2009 and 2010", but does anyone know what's planned for 2011?

There were mutterings about the retrospective hike being dropped, but I can't find out for sure anywhere. I want to know as there's a big jump between £235 and £435 VED per annum!

  • Xeena,

I've been looking into this for a while now with no sucess!

The DVLA were curt to the point of rudness when I enquired if the K Banding was temporary and told me to ask the Tresury.

Interestingly, in the official 2010 Budget Press Release the wording has changed and now says "Band K **Includes cars emitting over 225g/km registered before 23 March 2006".

There is no mention of the previous 'temporary' nature.

Make of this what you will - I guess it depends if you trust the goverment!

And for me, whatever their colour, I trust them not one jot.

    Good Luck,

    SplittingDistant.

    I also have a Shogun (with a legitimate use) - a 54 plate - owned it for 3 years.

Searching for details on VED after last year's budget, I expected to get hit with a huge increase (don't even get me started on the morality of retrospective price hikes), but my renewal at the end of December 2009 came through at £235 again. So I was confused then, confused now, and it's anyone's guess what will happen in 2011!

Thanks both, I appreciate your replies :)

I've decided not to buy the car, but I had ummed and ahhed about it with my friend, with the result that he's buying it instead!!

    You're welcome!

Perhaps buy a slightly older one to do away with the VED confusion? They have a reputation for going on, and on, and on...

(and if your legitimate reason is towing, they're fab ;))

Yeh, I'll see what the budget does next year I think. And thanks for the recommendation - my friend will be pleased to know that as he can finally come over here rather than me going over there all the time!!! ;) Hopefully my Renault Master will chug along for a bit longer yet!

If you want to buy a shotgun you'll need a certificate from the police and to get it you'll need to show a legitimate reason to own it.

If you want to buy a Shogun you can do so for any reason you wish - it's called living in a free country. Though sometimes I do wonder?

Well being as this is a Money Saving site, I was just trying to pre-empt those posters who may have suggested I could save money by getting a Ford Ka etc..................... (as well as anyone who may have questioned the environmental aspect).

I like your play on words though ;)

A legitimate reason to own a shotgun may be to cull Shogun haters and their fellow travellers! ;)

But you should consider a KA for towing your horsebox up the side of Ben Nevis - it'll save you a packet!
  • This Eco relate car tax tosh is a pain in the backside I'm looking to buy a used car (not a shogun I don't have a legitimate reason LOL) but a bigger family car since having a baby. The VED rates seem to be totally arbitrary from one car to the next of the same model. Hopefully the whole thing will get over hauled in to a simpler system soon.
Nothing to see here, move along.

I'm a bit confused by all these claims of legitimate use of Shoguns.

Have I missed something? Has there been legislation recently that restricts the use of Shoguns?
