Porting O2-> ASDA extra hold-my-hand guidance needed
Options
I am in course of transferring from O2's PATG to ASDA's and am keeping my old phone. I have got my PAC to retain my number and informed ASDA.
How will I know that the number has been transferred to the ASDA sim?
Unlikely, but would using the phone before the old number came over (i.e. with the ASDA sim's allocated one) c**k things up?

You can use the number that came with the new sim without a problem.
When the port goes through the old sim stops working. The new goes off while the old number gets taken down and the new one (your old one) gets attached, but it should come back on within a couple of hours. Just keep switching the phone off and on.0 -
Dead easy. The old number will swap onto the new number normally 48 hours after giving the new provider the PAC (Porting Authority Code) number (excluding weekends so Mon-Fri only). The old phone sim will, essentially, stop working and the identity will move over to the new sim. As you only have 1 phone and 2 sims just swap them once an hour and see what happens!!
Good Luck

Or would the new sim interrogated for "my number" on the list of contacts just show the ported number, once transfer has been completed?0
