Charity tax return for 2008-09

Hi

I am helping out a small charity (registered with HMRC and the Charity Commission as a charity) and am preparing a tax return (form CT600 Short 2008 Version 2) for the period 1st April 2008 to 31st March 2009. The deadline to submit this is 31st March so I would be very grateful for any feedback.

The charity has some bank interest (gross) of about £1,800, and some non-profit activities as well as received some contributions to running expenses.

I am having trouble interpreting the tax form but am I right in thinking that I do not need to enter any figures on the tax return because bank interest and non-profit activities are not taxable for a registered charity? There is also a form CT600E Version 2, do I need to enter any details on this form (for bank interest, it says “do not include amounts which are not taxable)?

Many thanks

Something has gone wrong here as registered charities do not complete tax returns as they are not liable to tax. I think you need to send the form back to HMRC with a covering letter to that effect.
The only return you make is to the CC (if your income is over £10k) and Companies House (if you are a company limited by gaurantee).

You don't need to do the tax return - someone hasn't set you up properly with the HMRC. They've been notified that you are a company, but not that you are a charitable company. Get in touch pronto.

Charitable companies do very occassionally get asked to do a special type of tax return called a Trust and Estate Return. Maybe every 10-15 years. If you get one of those, you do have to do it.
