Start looking at baby bargain specials and stock up before baby is born, spread your limited expenses out focusing on the must have's against the i likes...good luck, babies are expensive though

But don't stock up too much - you may find that baby doesn't get on with some of the stuff you buy.

Child Benefit isn't means tested - it's about £80 every 4 weeks. I think with your income you'd be in the band that gets about £40 every 4 weeks of Child Tax Credits, which is means tested, (it's slightly more in the baby's 1st year), so that's probably about £120 every 4 weeks in benefits (they are paid alternately so you get something every fortnight).

have to say I did try with cloth nappies but DS got AWFUL nappy rash - so much so that he had blisters from his own urine.

You must do what's right for you - breast or bottle, reusable or disposable - it's your choice. And it's no-one else's business.

I had DS by emergency section after a frankly terrible attempt at an induced labour, he was well overdue, big, I was not dilating and he had low oxygen, ...then I BF him. My midwife asked me to talk to expectant mums up at the docs about breastfeeding, so off I went - then she introduced me and asked me to start off with the story of the birth. I actually asked her if she was serious, given that DS had a traumatic arrival but she said yes, to I told it like it was...one of the expectant mums then asked me if I thought I DESERVED TO HAVE A HEALTHY SON AS I HAD NOT GIVEN BIRTH NORMALLY!
My reply was that I didn't care HOW my baby was born as long as I walked out of that hospital carrying a healthy baby.
A lot of people will tell you what you SHOULD do (as has been mentioned above, don't get involved with the breastfeeding clique...and this from someone who succesfully did BF) - you do whats right for you, baby and partner...it really isn't anyone elses business.

What a brave lady Valli - I'm trying to figure out how you didn't slap that girls face for such a comment.

My son decided that he wanted to do everything awkward so I'd gone from a perfectly normal pregnancy to the labour from hell. He had turned back to back, wasn't presenting his head correctly which resulted in me losing dilation due to swelling as I was pushing when he wasn't in the correct position. I also ended up with an epidural and finally after almost 27 hours I had a forceps assisted delivery as wee mans CTG was dropping very low. This was so not what I expected after I'd started out with no drugs in a hot bath and then progressed into a birthing pool with just gas & air.

There were a group of us all due at the same time and as far as I know just one of the 5 of us had a straightforward birth. There was one elective c-section, one emergency c-section, one forceps (me) and one ventuose. The 5th girl did spend 3 days being induced though! I also know that I'm not the only one who couldn't breast feed and to be honest I couldn't care less that I didn't. It just wasn't meant to be as there's no point beating myself up about it.

I can't believe someone would say something like that to you! so horrible and rude!

Have to agree with you about whats best for me and baby and partner! I would def be trying to breast feed and if not successful at least i know i have tried! I don't care what people think, they can keep their opinions to themselves lol, if you try your best what more can you do!

Births sound really scary now!!! lol. but im sure its worth it in the end!

  • How about knitting a few things too? Im a knitaholic so a bit biased, but it is coming back into fashion and you could easily knit up blanket squares and make some really special blankets for your baby that would save you perhaps a tenner a time. Then you could move on to simple cardigans - I knitted some very chic and modern wrap around cardis for my new neice last year and she loved them...like little ballet wraps...cost me about £1.50 in wool and a few relaxing evenings, saved my sister in law about £8-£10 on a special shop bought cardi. If you need any patterns for simple things (which suit me best!!) - feel free to pm me!
Im knitty, Im nutty, but I dont know anyone called Nora. :p

Thanks so much for the offer! My mum, granny and auntie are all very into their knitting/crochet etc so i will leave that to them! lol. my auntie is always knitting baby items so she would love to be knitting them for me (well my baby! lol) I love handmade things like that, personal touch is always nice! :) go you for doing your own! :T I don't have the patience, unfortunatly that talent didn't pass from my mum to me!! :(

Maybe I will have a talent in nappy changing or something like that!! haha

wat an awful thing to say, my twins were assisted(forceos and vaccum) with all drugs going and i was in established labour for 5days, where as jack was a quick 5hour labour i wasn't even sure i was in labour for the first 4 hrs then my waters went and it all went very quickly, but altho i know a natural del is better for the baby, the reason i refused a c section with my twins (which is whta they advise and suggested several times during those 5days) was because i was terrified of being cut open

my oh was elec section, and they cut his face :(

knitted stuff is lovely, as my twins were prem and always likely to be my granny knitted them sleeping bags they were sooo cute i still have one

i agree do whats right for you and your little family :)
