Government to temporarly scrap stamp duty up to £250k?

    Hoping for all us current property buyers that we will have a little more money in our pockets come today's announcement. We have just had an offer accepted and the house buying ball has started to roll ... this will be the first budget I am keen to hear the outcome of!

    Why does a paltry 1% matter so much to people. You could haggle 1% off the seller no problem, yet people are willing to put their purchase on hold for a stamp duty break? This country is full of idiots.

    Money saving expert = money saving!!! 1500 for a 150k purchase is money saving. MONEY IN OUR POCKETS!!!!!!!

    Why not just haggle 1% off the seller? Its peanuts in the grand scheme, especially when compared to what you idiots will be paying in mortgage interest once rates go up.

    Nobody's mentioned putting their purchase on hold. We were willing to pay it anyway but if today's announcement means we don't have to then I am going to be lucky enough to pay off just under £1.75k of my mortgage in an instant.

    If that makes me an idiot then rock on! :T

    This "paltry 1%" could easily be the difference between moving or not. Additionally, it's a further bargaining tool: at slightly more than £250,000 the marginal rate of tax would be astounding (anyone care to calculate?) and sellers will be under huge pressure to drop to below stamp if selling around £265,000 mark.

    Forget about it. Its a rumour. Do you know how endebted this country is? It will never happen. Get used to VAT going up to 20% over the next year, duty of fuel, booze and ciggys going up and a whole load of civil servants ending up on the dole queue.

    25%. Thats how much the government need to cut public expenditure to balance the budget. Do you know what 89 Billion pounds looks like? Thats what they are going to have to cut expenditure byover the next election term to ensure private investors wont walk away from the UK in disgust at its failed economic policy.

    And you lot think the government are going to give you 1% stamp duty? Dream on. Darling has already said there will be no more givaways. This budget is going to be all about placating the market to ensure there is no run on the pound until the election. That equals pain for the taxpayer if you were unsure.

    I would love to see a local seller hang on for 1% in my local area. Houses arent shifting and sellers are desperate. Maybe if you were living in London it would be an issue. Not for the majority of the UK. Do you know how long homes are on the market for on average in the Northwest at the moment?

    home purchase at 251K would attract 7.5K stamp duty.

    How rude! Maybe the buyer has already haggled down as far as possible? Who is the idiot making assumptions?
