After my earlier rant, then what happened this morning my advice is....
Don't be afraid to ask at your local shops/ florists i started last week asking around, i felt a bit cheeky but i'm desperate & did offer to pay for any they saved for me (would of still been cheaper for me than going to DIY on bus & paying there prices).
Both florisits in my town told me to come back in a weeks time so I went round this morning & between them i got a huge carrier bag full of pots, they wouldn't take any £ for them they said they where just happy more things were been grown in them rather than seeing them been thrown away.
You don't get if you don't ask !:j0 -
I have been thinking that cut down tetrapaks (from litre juice cartons, etc) would possibly work well - not for final pots I guess, but between seed trays/cells and final destination, maybe to replace the 4" pots? They should be waterproof (obv need to poke holes in the bottom) so they should hold up for long enough, and won't let the light through like plastic bottles would.
Other than that our garden centre puts all its old pots in big baskets in the carpark for people to take away; they are mainly no bigger than 4" though.0 -
I have been using my dd's empty custard pots to start off seddling then transfering to Morrision black pots (I got 10 for 99p)0

Thanks for all the replies! I am definately going to Tesco to get some of the freebies and ask at the florists in my town. I have a lidl down the road too. I am soo excited about some free pots! I will ask at the diy stores when I go too. Thanks so much for the advice. I have soooo many plants now that it would cost me a fortune to buy all the pots for them and I still ahve some more to start growing.0

Just to add, as I had run out of pots and urgently had to re-pot my plants that I had grown from seeds. I looked through the kitchen cuboards and found some plastic drinking cups, the ones that you get about 50 for a £1. I put some holes in the bottom and they have been great to use. Just need bigger ones now to move them onto. It's great having a site like this where you can share knowledge and ideas. I love it!0

If you just want something temporary, for potting on herbs and veggies, make your own out of newspaper. Use a yoghurt tub as a mould and don't be too fussy, wedge them together on a seedtray, then when you plant them out just leave the newspaper in place. One or two layers thick is plenty.0

:T Thanks, that's great, I shall be getting some of those, I might get two lots for the price!!
I went to Tesco's this morning and nicely asked the lady about the flower buckets being given away for free and she went to find out and came back and said 'no, they send them back and they get re-used' ?. So, no joy there. I toddled off to Lidl and they don't give them away either. I was a bit miffed but nevermind. Anywhere else to try?
Many thanks for all the replies0 -
I am going to ask at the garden centre tomorrow as sugested! Hopefully they might have some. I am off to get some freestanding shelves as have so many seeds and plants I now have to build upwards
