Like the O,P cars are one area that I'm not happy to make huge economies in, when I look at getting a new car, I want something that is going to be safe (as in EuroNCAP 5 star rating) and reliable, I'm totally unconvinced that a £500 to £1500 banger would be anyway as safe or relaible.
I know we all have to make choices as to what our priorities are, but if possible I want to make my car as safe as possible for family, friends and myself.
Buy a Volvo ! Mine is a cheap used S60, 5 star ENCAP and probably one of the safest cars on the road. In the 2 years I've had it its never failed. Starts first time - everytime. I know that if I have a crash then i stand a very good chance of being able to walk away from it. Cost for this safety - well you can pick up a used S60 for £2k. Its got 108k on it and at the moment whilst it can be expensive to fuel its a good solid car.
I do agree that spending money on a new car is pretty pointless. Before I bought the volvo i was in a company car scheme that cost me endless amounts of tax - car and fuel card. Coming out of the car scheme was the best thing I have ever done and I would never tie myself into that type of contract again.0 -
No car is " safe " it is only as safe as the nut behind the wheel.
If our roads were empty I might agree, but that isn't the case. After knowing someone who was in an accident, where he was the innocent party and severely injured and the other party who caused the accident was only slightly injured, because he was in a "safer" car I've always bought cars with good crash protection.
your comment just trivialises the protection a car can give and while in some accidents it doesn't matter what car you are in, in others it can make the difference as to whether you walk away.0 -
"I don't think the Nissan Qashqai the OP is thinking of getting is a "luxury 4x4" most of the Qashqai range are front wheel drive, and really takes the same position in the Nissan range that the Golf does in VW's range."
You are quite right, its just a 2wd and nowhere near a luxury car.
Thank you.
"With several grand in credit card debt and only having £1500 saved up do you really NEED to be getting yourself further in to debt just to buy a brand new luxury 4x4? You could buy a £1500 car just now, put £238 a year plus whatever else you have left over from paying your credit cards into a savings account for 3 years and I bet you would be better off for it. I'm very glad we bought a £500 banger instead of a nearly new X3 like we were looking at previously, the extra money is a godsend."
Thanks for your advice but again it wasn't what I asked for.
I have not updated my credit cards for a while on here so they are out of date.
I am no longer in debt and besides have always had money to cover my debt.
There was not enough info in my original post for you to assume anything.
I asked a question and thankfully have received some very constructive answers.
"To the OP, don't be offended by the advice given as to whether or not you can afford the car. It is the standard reply to any post of this type, because this a after all a motoring section of a moneysaving forum. :money:
The replies are not imtended to be patronising or condecending as has been suggested in other posts, but merely to advise that there are other ways of owning a car.
Anyway you have the answer you wanted, and some you didn't;)"
Thanks for your reply and I am not offended. Some people just can't wait to patronise and condescend. I just wish that they could answer the question put to the board instead of moralising. Again I did not give enough information for people to decide if i can afford a particular car or not. If you don't have anything constructive to say then dont't say it.
Again thanks for all the constructive replies. They have been of great help.

As a matter of interest Fifi, can I ask what attracts you to the Nissan?
To me I don't get it, and in fact seems just a basic version of the Ford Kuga. (for some reason ford have always accessorised these vehicles better, the Maverick was the same)0 -

....and yours just trivialises the importance of safe driving, there are a lot of drivers out there that think because their vehicle has this farcical 5 * rating that they are somehow immune to accidents.0 -

I'm afraid that I feel you are just a Troll looking for an argument, and no point did I give any indication that I trivialised safe driving.
I should point out that as a recently retired highways engineer and Road Safety Auditor I have quite a good concept of how driving standards and perspectives have a huge impact on road safety, I also have a full motorcycle licence so know what it's like to be a more vulnerable road user.
However if you wish to keep trying to be clever and misrepresent what I post, please carry on I know it makes you happy :rotfl:

I actually did look at the 4 wheel drive version of the cashcow, for me, too short, useless high level rear space and poor rear seat space,??????
4wd estate for me next time, probably Saburu. :TI like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)
Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed0 -
