    Don't worry if you miss this, there are free .rar programs available anyway (filzip for example - not tried it myself, but just a for instance). If you want just a simple zip program, try 'justzipit' - brilliantly siimple and free but .zip only http://free-backup.info/

    Sorry to be a little off-thread, but I can recommend Alzip for this purpose. It will handle just about any known type of archive and it's freeware.

    Just a note to point out that Alzip is free for personal use only, not free for commercial use
  • Remember that if you want to zip up a file in windows xp just right click the file and click "send to " compressed file.
    Zip compression is built into xp.
    I prefer rar as it has better file compression on certain types of files and better multiple volume spanning and tends to be faster.

    Even better, free and open source is 7zip. It handles 7 different types of file compression, creation and extraction.

    Tugzip is free and support *.rar zip and many moe.
    It is working better than winrar (my own opinion) so wht bother.
