You're not sounding silly at all, I'm really gratefull for the trouble you've gone to.
Yes I'm using XP. I have gone to the link you provided and followed their instructions but get this message:-
"Files that are required for Windows to run properly must be copied to the DLL cache. Insert your Windows XP Professional service pack 2 CD now."
I put my disc in (which is Genuine, as I bought it from Microsoft directly) and click the retry button but keep getting the above message.0 -

Only if you're comfortable (and can afford things going wrong) with using beta software."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

Thanx for all your suggestions.
I have waited and clicked retry but get the same message as before.
I have tried to install Beta V 11 but still get this error msg:-
This version of Windows Media Technologies is incompatible with this version of Windows. For more information, view the information at the Microsoft web site.
Think I might have to do a complete reinstall??0 -

I can't understand why you want to use WMP to play mp3's as it's rubbish. There are far better programs around to use!

I really like it but now it's become an obsession, I hate things that don't work properly and I'm determined to get to the bottom of it, cheers anyway0 -

Very understandable, it can easily be a symptom of something more critical. It does sound like the best solution would be a complete reinstall (or maybe just a windows repair) if you are happy to do that, I know what a hassle it can be."She is quite the oddball. Hi
Its asking for a SP2 cd, not your original xp, you can download SP2 and burn it to disk.

I am not sure if this will help but
I uninstalled wmp 11 recently to go back to wmp 10, but to uninstall I had to go to add remove programs and tick the show updates box in the top right hand corner to uninstall to updates to my xp system that came with wmp 11, I was puzzled by this because nothing showed till I ticked that box.
I am sure someone will be along with more useful info thoughI always wanted to be a procrastinator, never got round to it...0
