Thanks all for good advice - lots of suggestions I've started to follw-up, BUT I am amazed about EHIC plus. I just went online and have a quote (I have declared all Oh's and my extensive 'illnesses' (we are actually very fit) and tho my original quote through Diabetes Uk came to £398, the EHIC-plus one is £47.00. I don't understand how they can do it. Does anyone know if there is something odd about EHIC - it seems too good to be true ? It seems to be related to the EHIC card which is surely an EU thing, whereas EHIC plus seems not to be. I think this will be brilliant if I can trust it, but sometimes things that seem too good to be true are just that and turn out to be dodgy.
In any case, thank you Aloise for pointing me in their direction !

As it happens, I've just come off the phone from getting a similarly good value quote from EHICPlus. However, the policy is ONLY valid if you have a CURRENT EHIC in your possession. And guess what - DH's expired last month!

Hoping the new one will come early next week, at least we're not on the crack of dawn flight ...

Small update: I have pondered this for ages (we go on hols on May 8th) but have decided to do the EHIC-plus one as people like Flexicover won't give me an annual policy. The next best seemed to be the Mountaineers, but that still came to £150.63 for the two of us (includes £51.00 membership) My S-I-l is a real mountaineer and laughed a lot at the idea of OH and I being designated as mountaineers...
I shall do the EHIC-Plus one and will report back if we need to make a claim at all, and how it went (though one always hopes not to, of course) though of course if you never have to claim at all it's betterto have paid £47.00 than £150.00 or even £398.00 ! Thanks for advice and help kind people.....

They are an add on to ehic card
They do insist you have to go to a state hospital if possible. Don't think they would have to pay much out as most of the hospitals should be recipicle. (i think, or am i talking a load of rubbish? ).:D Have used them 3 times but up to now never need to call on them so don't know what they would be like if you had to claim. They seem to have got good reviews.

The other fairly vital thing to remember with EHIC plus is that it is a EUROPEAN policy.

When we went to the USA, we were able to upgrade our PO policy for a reasonable price. If we'd been with EHIC then, we'd have had to take out a separate policy.

I'm quite happy with EHIC plus, on the grounds that I don't anticipate having to make a medical claim - all our problems are stable, and DH's osteoporosis is actually improving, so the risk of a broken bone are reducing.

But I may change my mind if ever anything goes wrong!

We went with the above and an annual European policy was £48 and then £10 each on top because of pre existing medical conditions.

    Might be worth a ring.

Oh Dear . even Martin has withdrawn his endorsement of EHIC Plus, I'd be very wary about using them!

Knowledge is often mistaken for intelligence. This is like mistaking a cup of milk for the whole cow.
