Hero "Can't establish a reliable connection to the the server"
Options
When I first got my Hero I did not bother to setup a google account when first starting it up. I figured that I could always go back and do it later.
Now a few months down the line I have decided now is the time and set about it. Unfortunately when I go through the process with the phone I have to halt a point where I am given the following message "Can't establish a reliable connection to the the server" and it goes on to suggest there is a problem with the sim or network provider. Researching this on the internet I find out that there are 2 ways of fixing the problem.
One is to root the phone and then remove a few directories here and there and the other is to do a factory reset. The first method is quite involved while the second seems easy enough apart from the fact that you lose your contacts and text messages.
I have decided to go the 2nd way because it is simpler but need to find a way to save my text messages(I can backup my contacts to my computer using htc sync).
So does anyone know how this could be done?(or better still another way to set up gmail on my Hero)

Doesn't Android back up SMS to the SD card if fitted as a matter of course?
(I don't own an Android handset, this is just something I think I've read over the months... worth checking.)Starting Debt: ~£20,000 01/01/2009. DFD: 20/11/2009 :j

Try setting up your google account on a PC first, you can import your contacts to it there and tidy them up for use with the phone. The phone works best with google contacts so you will have to do this at some point anyway!
Hopefully the phone will let you sign in to the existing account.
When I reset my Hero I downloaded Mybackup from the android market to store texts etc on the SD card, its paid software but you get 30 days free trial.
Edit, not sure if you can use the market without a google account, ignore me if thats the case.
