Police told not to ask people for Christian names. Police in Essex are being advised not to ask people for their Christian names in fear of offending members of other faiths. They have been advised to use the expression whats your peronal name.................

personal name... what a load of rubbish! why can't they just ask for the first name? surely that cannot have any non pc implications?

"can I have your first name... as in the name you write first when you write your whole name out or the name people shout first when they see you in the street?" no doubt it'll be replied to with the persons SURNAME! idiots lol

Ah, well, first name could confuse the japanese, because in japan, people use their surname first.

Utada Hikaru (as she's known in the west) is Hikaru Utada back home and also if you were to ask her her name in japan she'd reply "hikaru."

Personally I would have thought 'given name' would have been the most logical non-denominational term.

It's amazing how those with a can-do attitude and willingness to 'pitch in and work' get all the luck, isn't it?

Yes, and it's the same with the Chinese. And Hungarians too I believe.
  • It IS ridiculous!!

I worked in a call centre and we weren't allowed to ask for a Christian name.

I used to ask for the person's first name not given name, as we needed it for DPA. Just my preference though.

My Sister once had a Union Jack towel hanging on her washing line and was ' asked ' to remove it as it was insulting certain people!!!!

  • @ the chinese/japanese name thing.

I think the majority of people, if they left those countries, would switch the names around and have their surname last. My parents did and all my family do when they come here on holiday etc. I'm chinese, btw.
