Can anyone recommend a basic ONLINE savings account?

Hi there,

I am hoping to open an online savings account jointly with my partner so we can transfer some of our wages into it and save towards a mortgage. We dont need anything fancy at all, no overdrafts or anything like that but instant access with a cash card would be handy for emergences. I tried SMILE, but we were refused without any explaination given. Im trying to avoid being refused again so does anyone know of a suitable account where we are likely to be accepted? Thanks!

Thanks for providing this link. Have you used this service yourself? What were your experiences? We really want to avoid making multiple applications to different banks because all the checks could affect our credit rating, thats why we are looking for recommendations so hopefully the next application we make will be successful. Any advice at all would be gratefully received.

They're absolutely fine to deal with in my experience. Had the cashcard delivered in just over a week; the internet banking is good for a savings-only account and telephone backup has been very good when I've had to call. The rate is quite keen for a cashcard account too.

    I'd recommend them without hesitation.

You should not be credit checked for opening a savings account. You can have as many savings accounts with as many organisations as you like. The only adverse effect is keeping track of them all.

I use HSBC savings on line - not great rates but really easy to use.

Ah...i assumed that was the reason we were refused an account with SMILE. I could'nt think of any other reasonable explaination (they certainly didnt give us one) for why they had declined our application.

It seems silly to credit check for a savings account! I understand them making the nessacery checks to verify your identity and perhaps your income status but considering iam not asking to borrow any money at all and im actually trying to GIVE THEM money via way of saving with them i don't see how your credit rating really has anything to do with the whole process. Their only concern should be fraud prevention and as long as i can prove who i am, where i live and what i earn there should be no problem. Oh well its thier loss really but i am still without a savings account so i guess no one wins.
