Anyone able to recommend some nice freeware DVD Rippers.

I'm going to convert my DVD collection into compressed files so that I can store them on my media centre PC, as I hate loading CDs I want to use them from menus.

    Hi
Handbrake will do a good job ripping to mp4 files.
    Using MPEG-4 or H264 codecs.
    But read this first:-http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showpost.html?p=31016225&postcount=2

I did have an application the could rip protected DVDs and there was also one called DVD Shrink but have no ideas if they're still used. I have the originals but it would be nicer being able to choose them through a menu or running a back to back playlist

ahhhh .... the infamous DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink combination. Served me well for many years until they stopped being supported and DVD encryption became more sophisticated.

I'm afraid there's not much in the way of Freeware that can help you these days even DVDfab HD Decrypter is not free anymore.

Best I could offer is AnyDVD from slysoft (google it).... there is a cost involved but it's constantly updated to cope with the latest encryption methods

Free version can't handle encrypted DVDs - upgrade to their "platinum" version (which you have to pay for) and it does

Good but out of date - won't work against latest encryption techniques

DVDFab HD Decrypter is still free, I use it! Its the only part of DVDFab thats free though.

What I do is use DVDFab Decrypter to rip the entire movie to my HDD. I then use DVDShrink (which works with Windows 7) to strip out all the extra's and just give me an .iso of the movie. I then use handbrake to covert it to mp4 and there you go!

If you do need to rip .iso files to dvd though, imgburn is great.

Obvious caveat, you must own all dvd's as piracy is wrong! I just wanted access to all my films on my PS3 as I'm lazy!

It's not free but I use the SlySoft AnyDVD and CloneDVDmobile, the software is updated every couple of days as new encryption comes out.

Your method looks OK to me. :)
I suppose that Handbrake isn't really meant to be used as a 'ripper'.
On their website it says that Handbrake is a 'video transcoder'.
