A friend of mine got married, spent what I thought was an excessive 20k, turns out he got a 50k bonus from work to pay for it.

Plus he has now doubled his salary to 110k...

Fair play to him though he deserves it for all the work he puts in.
    Plan

    3) Ensure healthy pension fund - (Doing)
    4) Ensure house is nice, suitable, safe, and located - (Done)
    5) Keep everyone happy, healthy and entertained (Done, Doing, Going to do)

I think the cost of most weddings are driven by the bride and her mother. I'm sure we all know women who live, sleep and eat weddings for up to 18 months before their big day. I'm sure that plenty get far too embroiled in the whole thing, and then have a really empty feeling in their lives when they get back from honeymoon and find that they're now married to a man that they're not actually that muh in love with.

What, lock you in a tower like Rapunzel or feed you a poisoned apple?

Whisk you away on his white charger was more what I had in mind;) However, your version is probably closer to reality:D

But even where money is not necessarily short: would it not be better to do away with all the "unreality" and put the money saved towards a bigger deposit/lower mortgage and easier time making ends meet?

I am always slightly horrified by the degree of debt that some of my "better off" friends have simply in order to "look good":(

Luckily for me my better half doesn't want to spend a fortune on the wedding as long as we are both there thats all I want... I don't need an ice swan!

With that we both know if we have a spare 18k its going on a house and not a wedding. We are hoping to keep it down to less than £3k.

As with all averages mean nothing, I am paid well for the area but just scrape over the average for the country.

Me too. :rotfl: Spent £250 tops on a weekend in a hotel and a registry office 'do in Edinburgh - dragged 2 strangers off the street to act as witnesses - saved so much hassle, and money we could ill afford. :) But I will admit that's not for everyone.

However I have known friends get seriously into debt paying for some spectacular 'do - then bust up a few years down the line because of all the financial stress :( Something is seriously missing somewhere when a marriage is all about 'show', and less about the relationship. Its so sad. :(
SMILE....they will wonder what you are up to...........;)

    My wedding is costing £400.
I intend to stay married forever so would rather save for that- then spend it all in a day!

The average Wedding spend seems to be down, since 2007...

We've been married over 30 years. We weren't particularly poor when we got married, but ... a few bunches of flowers, a 'wedding dress' that my wife wore to a good few functions after that, the reception consisted of sandwiches in the hall afterwards.

OTOH, we had the money to buy our own place straight away, and the money to trade up when we needed more room.

People really need to get a grip on the essentials. Still, I'm preaching to the converted here on MSE.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?
