I sat down with my cup of tea and chocolate biscuits ready, I was calling Barclaycard to close the account and to leave. My balance was Zero ( just paid it off) but the interest rate was high. I used to have a poor credit history but is good now !!
I was ready for a fight, i would stay if they lowered the interest rate but lets see what happens
'Hello Barclycard how can i help?'
' I'd like to close my account please'
' Ok Mr Chilli Dog thats been done for you and a letter is going out to you'
' Erm ok thanks'
My tea was still hot at the end of the 2 min chat. completle took the wind from my sails.
Oh well
Anyone think they will call me back or is that it?

I closed a Lloyds TSB Credit card a week ago after reading some stuff on this site.
I thought that I was going to have to answer a zillion and one questions. But their reaction was the same as yours.
Couple of days later I received a letter in the post confirming it had been closed!
So much for 'retention'! ... Perhaps I over estimated my value to them, cos I was disappointed that they didn't try to keep me! "Never save something for a special occasion. Every day in your life is a special occasion". _party_0 -

If anyone else is considering closing LTSB (and hoping for another deal), the retention department's direct line is (or was earlier this year) 0800 032 2044.0 -
Ahh, to be honest, I didn't really want to be retained! Its just nice to 'humour' oneself!
I have to admit that because it was so easy, it was a pleasure. "Never save something for a special occasion. Every day in your life is a special occasion". _party_0 -
I rang Natwest to close my account. Spoke to Advisor who said I would put you through to retention. Five mins late a very abrupt voice said the account has been closed and didnt even say they were sorry I was leaving.
Always ran account well but need to reduce my available credit as far too high at moment.0 -
Having just read this thread, I just called HSBC, i've had a gold card of theirs for years. After two minutes ten seconds negotiating their automated system, the advisor asked me why I was closing the account. I replied that I've seen better offers. She thanked me and said I will receive a letter in the post. Total call time three minutes 10 seconds!Well life is harsh, hug me don't reject me.0

Cancelled my Mint card last week and was shocked at the lack of attempt on their part to keep me, so maybe its something industry wide that they are doing at the moment
Just make sure they send you letters confirming cancellation. I have had a case with Barclaycard where them saying on the phone the account is closed and them actually closing are 2 different things. Until you have it in writing I wouldn't assume its closed...0 -
was going to cancel my barclaycard about a month ago, but was told they were doing some deals soon and changing interest rates etc and trying to get me to keep the account, so i did.
they did just that, put it up to a sky high 24.9% apr from 17.5% apr.
so phoned up and asked to close my accoung and just got told the account was closed.0 -
Great to see some people having 'good' experiences for a change.
(Or maybe these experiences should really be the norm and it's just that we are all used to getting the runaround).DFW Nerd 0350 -

That's very useful information. I have an LTSB card that charges about 21 zillion percent, which thankfully now has zero balance on it. I'm planning a call in a month or so's time which will be an attempt at getting a sensible life-of-balance rate, if possible. They did offer me one a while back, but as I didn't have a clue about how I could use the credit at the time, I didn't take it. Shame really, as I suppose I could have stoozed it...£2 coin savers club: £1.49

I PHONED UP BARCLAYCARD AND CAPITALONE TO CLOSE MY ACCOUNTS, AND THEY BOTH ASKED WHY, I EXPLAINED ABOUT HIGH APR, AND BOTH FOUGHT TO KEEP MY CUSTOM, AND HALVED THE APR!
GOOD DEAL:j0
