Cannot access Tesco Finance online

Title says it all.

Cannot get into my accounts online - never a problem in the past.
Currently using latest version of Firefox - rather not use IE.

Any ideas gratefully received - many thanks,

Bob

  • Sorry, this is not a helpful post but the same thing happened to me today

None of my other online banking facilities have a problem with Firefox 3.6...

  • Tesco's must have gone bankrupt then. It's probably something to do with the credit crunch.

I used to have issues with Tesco not recognising upgraded versions of Firefox for a long time after they were released. Install the User Agent Switcher addon if you want to get around it.
  • This happens every time there's a significant update for Firefox. It occurred last autumn as well. If you call Tesco Bank they will tell you that they're working on it but don't have a date when it will be sorted. This one's been with us for well over a month now, back to when FF 3.6 was released. They claim it's all to do with security concerns.

The short answer is simply to switch over to IE with the 'IE View' add-on in my case. Annoying, and it doesn't happen with any of my other sites I visit, but Tesco are getting too regular with this practice for my liking. Not good enough for a major retailer. :(:(

Agreed, but it appears that Tesco's site is still run by that very large Scottish Bank [84% owned by us] - or, I suppose, whoever they have outsourced the job to :(.

Given this number by CS 0845 6000 873 (option 2).

Phoned today - " We are still testing Firefox , try using IE "

So they are happy for us to use a less well regarded ( possibly less secure ) bit of software to access our accounts.

    Hmmm - unimpressed !

  • I'm sure this session started after I installed Firefox 3.6 and that was on the 21st January last. When I rang a couple of weeks ago, they said the same thing and had not been given any date when access by Firefox would be resumed. Just can't believe it.

    enter about:config in the URL
    yes to the warning
    go down to general.useragent.extra.firefox
    right click and modify
    change Firefox/3.6.x to Firefox/3.5.8

No, that's not the case. The site was built when Tesco Finance was a joint venture with RBS/Natwest, but RBS doesn't have anything to do with it any more. In addition, Natwest doesn't have the same problems as Tesco and is the best online banking service I use (In addition to Tesco, I have accounts with and use the online services of: Halifax, Natwest, First Direct, Lloyds, Norwhich & Peterborough, Santander, Alliance and Leicester, Egg and Nationwide).

My "favourite" problem with the Tesco site is it telling me I've been logged out due to inactivity - this half way through the log-in process!

While I'd rate Natwest's online banking below most other banks, I agree wholeheartedly that Tesco's problems are entirely it's own. Tesco cannot be relied upon to respond to developments within the field of security, as has been demonstrated in their behaviour as described in this thread. Imagine if it was discovered that their own systems had some sort of vulnerability. It could take weeks/months for them to adapt to the situation. Is it worth a few pennies extra interest for the extra risk of fraud on your account because the people working for TPF are behind the curve when it comes to adapting to changes in online banking?
